Common (but manageable) symptoms of an approaching period:
Tender breasts
Fatigue
Migraines
Water retention
Lower back pain
Irritability and mood swings
Food cravings, particularly for sweet things
Skin blemishes, acne breakouts

Symptoms that are admittedly common but should not be considered normal or inevitable! The norm would be to experience periods arriving with minimal warning signs — perhaps slightly fuller breasts than usual, a slightly more bloated lower abdomen, and possibly a mild dip in energy. Knowing how to calculate your ovulation helps you understand your cycle well.

Periods last on average between 3 and 7 days
A flow that is too heavy or periods that last more than 7 days can have several causes, which it is important to discuss with a healthcare professional, especially if this occurs suddenly.
The same applies to a light flow or periods lasting fewer than 3 days
Excessively heavy periods can be a sign of a condition such as endometriosis, or simply an excess of oestrogen
Please note: if you use a copper coil, it is common for this to increase inflammation and cause more painful periods with heavier bleeding and longer cycles.

I suffer from conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or hypothyroidism, or hypothalamic amenorrhoea.
I am in perimenopause
I have chronic stress
I am still breastfeeding — or I have too much prolactin (without breastfeeding)
I am following a diet that is too restrictive, not enough calories, or free from carbohydrates
I exercise too intensely or too frequently
I have been taking the pill for years
To bring periods back in cases of amenorrhoea, the first step is therefore to remove these potential "threats" from our immediate environment.

During your period, the body naturally produces hormones called prostaglandins, which help the uterus contract to shed its lining.
It is normal for the area to "work hard".
However, it is not normal for your period to prevent you from carrying out your daily activities or to cause vomiting.
This should prompt you to consult a doctor to rule out a possible diagnosis of endometriosis.

Endometriosis can be asymptomatic ("silent") or, on the contrary, very debilitating.
When symptoms are present, they can be multiple: pain, functional disorders of neighbouring organs, etc. Endometriosis and fatigue are inseparable.
Symptoms vary from woman to woman, depending on the organs affected.

Genetic factors: certain genes may predispose someone to endometriosis — but it's not inevitable!
Environmental toxins, such as dioxin, may also be linked to its development
Retrograde menstruation, or the implantation theory — though this theory is increasingly being questioned
Endometrial tissue present from birth, lying "dormant", before hormones at puberty "activate" it
Immune system dysfunction
A link with digestive issues ("leaky gut")

Debilitating pain that prevents leading a normal life
Pain at the sites of endometriosis lesions may also be accompanied by issues such as: severe fatigue, a sense of malaise, low mood, chronic fatigue…
Endometriosis may also be associated with fertility problems. Endometriosis and pregnancy can prove to be complicated.

The first pains can generally appear during periods, during sexual intercourse, or when inserting a tampon or during urination.
Other possible symptoms include cramps or diffuse pain in the lower abdomen.
When adhesions and scar tissue develop, pain occurs in a way that is more independent of the cycle.
