FAQ on vegan food supplements

The main sources are plant-based, including legumes, cereals and nuts (57% of daily intake), followed by animal-based foods such as meat (18%) and dairy products (10%), although small amounts can also come from algae, bacteria and fungi (mycoprotein).
Protein quality is determined by digestibility. Animal sources are considered "complete proteins" as they provide all nine essential amino acids, whereas plant sources are described as "incomplete" as they may be deficient in one or more.
To avoid deficiencies as a vegan, the key is to vary plant-based proteins daily (for example, combining cereals and legumes throughout the day).

The consequences vary greatly depending on the nutrient in question. An iron deficiency can lead to anaemia, for example. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the consequences can be more serious and have a direct impact on your baby's development. For example, DHA (found in small oily fish) contributes to the healthy development of your baby's brain and vision. It is important to have appropriate nutritional monitoring to provide your body with all the essential nutrients it needs.
In everyday life, deficiencies often manifest as sleep disturbances (with a lack of zinc and vitamin D, for example), fatigue, effects on mood and memory, hair loss, skin problems, and so on.

At the very least, it is essential to supplement with vitamin B12. This is the key vitamin for people following a vegan diet, as it is not found in plant-based foods.
For other vitamins and minerals, supplementation may be strongly recommended. Vitamin D is found in some mushrooms, but in insufficient quantities. DHA (a fatty acid) is found in fish, although the body can synthesise a small amount from plant-based fatty acid sources. Iron is much better absorbed from animal sources, though it is also found in plant foods — pairing its consumption with sources of vitamin C helps improve absorption. As for choline, it is found in small amounts in seeds, almonds, cabbage, and beans, so intake requires careful attention; it can be very difficult to meet your needs, particularly during the maternity period.

Collagen protein is an animal protein — there is no vegan alternative. However, some vegan food supplements claim to support collagen synthesis (vitamin C is notably required for its synthesis) or contain amino acids that make up collagen.

Vegan food supplement

In the context of a vegan diet, it may be necessary to supplement your nutrition with additional vitamins and minerals. These include omega-3s, iron, vitamins B12 and D, and choline. Vegan multivitamin supplements can provide a comprehensive intake, particularly if your diet is not varied and balanced, and even more so if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
It is recommended to be supported by a healthcare professional, especially at the start, to ensure no food group is overlooked.
