Breast pad - Hot and cold breast compress for breastfeeding

Cold is effective at reducing breast pain, particularly in cases of engorgement, and to reduce swelling.

Applying warmth can help encourage milk flow. If you are suffering from engorgement, it is best to alternate with cold application for optimal relief. Too much heat could in fact worsen engorgement. Start by applying warmth, then express your milk (by hand or with a breast pump), and then apply a cold compress to soothe the discomfort.

In the event of mastitis, applying warmth will also be beneficial to soothe and encourage milk flow.

How to position it. Cool or heat the compress as directed below, then slip it into its soft cover. Centre it on the breast, with the nipple at the central opening.

With a breast pump. The compress can be used with a manual or electric breast pump. Place it in its cover around the breast shield and leave it in place throughout pumping.

Duration. Do not use the compress for more than 20 minutes at a time.

For cold use. Place the compress without its cover in the fridge or freezer for at least 4 hours. Then slip it into its cover before applying it.

For warm use in the microwave. Heat the compress for 16 seconds at 700 W, 13 seconds at 1000 W or 11 seconds at 1250 W. Check the temperature and, if necessary, continue heating in 5-second increments. Gently massage the compress to distribute the heat evenly.

For warm use in a water bath. Bring a pan of water to the boil, then remove it from the heat. Once the water has stopped boiling, immerse the compress for 1 to 2 minutes. It must be completely covered with water and must not touch the sides of the pan. Check the temperature and, if necessary, immerse it again for 1 minute. Do not leave the pan unattended.

Caution. Always check the temperature of the compress and place it in its cover before applying it. Do not overheat it: heating it for too long may damage it, and prolonged use may cause burns. Not suitable for babies or young children. Do not use if you have poor blood circulation, or on stitches or an open wound. If you experience severe, persistent or chronic pain, consult a healthcare professional. Do not puncture the compress or ingest its contents. For external use only.

Clean the compress and its cover with mild soap and water. Let them air-dry before the next use.
