FAQ on vegan food supplements

There are several nutrients at risk of deficiency, including:
Vitamin B12: this is the vitamin you will inevitably be deficient in.
Vitamin D: it can be synthesised by the body through sun exposure, but dietary intake is also required. A deficiency is harmful to calcium metabolism, a nutrient that also requires careful attention in the case of a vegan diet. Our pregnancy vitamin D suitable for all helps to meet your needs.
Iron: haem iron is found exclusively in animal-based foods, as it is bound to proteins such as haemoglobin. It is better absorbed by the body than non-haem iron, the form found in most foods (plant-based and animal). Plant-based foods contain only non-haem iron. Our iron supplement for pregnant women helps to meet your needs with a well-absorbed form and a dosage tailored to each individual.
Omega-3s: essential for the brain, particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding for the healthy development of the baby's vision and brain. The body can synthesise them from another fatty acid, ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), found notably in vegetable oils. However, conversion is low and would not be sufficient to meet the body's needs for DHA and EPA, particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Our pregnancy omega-3, rich in DHA, is suitable for all those following this type of diet.
Choline: essential during pregnancy for the healthy development of the baby. In particular, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, needs are such that even if you are not vegan, supplementation is necessary to ensure an optimal intake. Our supplement pregnancy choline is ideal for meeting your needs.
Iodine, zinc and selenium: they are found in several plant-based foods, but in small quantities. It is important to maintain a varied and balanced diet to ensure a good intake. Taking a women's food supplement containing these nutrients can be beneficial, especially during important life stages such as the perimenopause, where taking menopause vitamins can help.

The main sources are plant-based, including legumes, cereals and nuts (57% of daily intake), followed by animal-based foods such as meat (18%) and dairy products (10%), although small amounts can also come from algae, bacteria and fungi (mycoprotein).
Protein quality is determined by digestibility. Animal sources are considered "complete proteins" as they provide all nine essential amino acids, whereas plant sources are described as "incomplete" as they may be deficient in one or more.
To avoid deficiencies as a vegan, the key is to vary plant-based proteins daily (for example, combining cereals and legumes throughout the day).

The consequences vary greatly depending on the nutrient in question. An iron deficiency can lead to anaemia, for example. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the consequences can be more serious and have a direct impact on your baby's development. For example, DHA (found in small oily fish) contributes to the healthy development of your baby's brain and vision. It is important to have appropriate nutritional monitoring to provide your body with all the essential nutrients it needs.
In everyday life, deficiencies often manifest as sleep disturbances (with a lack of zinc and vitamin D, for example), fatigue, effects on mood and memory, hair loss, skin problems, and so on.

At the very least, it is essential to supplement with vitamin B12. This is the key vitamin for people following a vegan diet, as it is not found in plant-based foods.
For other vitamins and minerals, supplementation may be strongly recommended. Vitamin D is found in some mushrooms, but in insufficient quantities. DHA (a fatty acid) is found in fish, although the body can synthesise a small amount from plant-based fatty acid sources. Iron is much better absorbed from animal sources, though it is also found in plant foods — pairing its consumption with sources of vitamin C helps improve absorption. As for choline, it is found in small amounts in seeds, almonds, cabbage, and beans, so intake requires careful attention; it can be very difficult to meet your needs, particularly during the maternity period.

Collagen protein is an animal protein — there is no vegan alternative. However, some vegan food supplements claim to support collagen synthesis (vitamin C is notably required for its synthesis) or contain amino acids that make up collagen.

Vegan food supplement

As part of a vegan diet, it may be necessary to supplement your nutritional intake with additional vitamins and minerals. Think omega-3, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and choline. Vegan multivitamin food supplements can provide a comprehensive intake, especially if your diet is not varied and balanced — and even more so if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is recommended to be supported by a healthcare professional, particularly at the start, to make sure you are not missing out on any food group.
