Origin and description

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid essential that forms part of the membranes of all cells, particularly those of the brain and the retina.

Sous forme naturelle, le DHA est principalement présent dans les poissons gras (saumon, maquereau, sardines, hareng, anchois, foie de morue), algues marines et produits animaux enrichis en DHA comme les œufs, certaines viandes ou laits. L’avantage : apport global nutritionnel et une bonne absorption par l’organisme, à condition de soigner le dosage.

Sous forme de complément alimentaire, on le retrouve dans les compléments de DHA, avec option végan, qui permettent d’apporter directement la forme active d’oméga 3 nécessaire au cerveau et la rétine. Il peut également être présent dans une vitamine grossesse mais il doit être séparé des autres actifs. Le dosage est contrôlé et reproductible d’un jour à l’autre, ce qui facilite l’atteinte des recommandations pendant la grossesse et l’allaitement, y compris chez les mamans et futures mamans qui consomment peu ou pas de poisson. ll peut également être pris en complément alimentaire ménopause pour soutenir le cerveau et la santé cardiovasculaire.

How does it work? (The science bit)

DHA is a superb ally for your baby's brain and eyes. Think of it as a tiny drop of oil that gently "lubricates" the circuits of your baby's nervous system, so that everything works perfectly and the connections between neurons are smooth and efficient.

During pregnancy, DHA reaches your bloodstream through your diet or your supplements, then crosses the placenta to go directly where your baby needs it most: its brain and eyes. It is especially during the last trimester, when your baby's brain is growing at full speed, that the need for DHA is at its highest.

And after the birth? DHA continues its action through breast milk, still supporting the maturation of the nervous system, vision and learning. If you do not wish to or cannot breastfeed, don't worry: there are also infant milks enriched with DHA, to replicate this natural boost.

Experts recommend a minimum daily intake of 250 mg of DHA during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Whether you prefer oily fish or a specialist maternity supplement, the important thing above all is to ensure your DHA intake, by choosing the option that suits you best!

At the recommended doses, DHA is generally well tolerated. At higher doses, some people may report mild digestive discomfort (nausea, reflux, loose stools). In cases of very high intake, caution is strongly advised for people on anticoagulant treatment.
