What is a plant-based milk?

A plant-based milk, or plant-based drink, is made from water and ground cereals or dried fruits.

It can be used as a substitute for cow's milk, as a drink and in cooking. Plant-based milks are naturally lactose-free, low in fat and sugars, cholesterol-free, and largely gluten-free.

Plant-based milk: who is it for?

Plant-based milk can be consumed by everyone, except where intolerances or allergies to tree nuts or gluten (in the case of oat milk) are present.

It is recommended for vegans, and for those who are intolerant to or allergic to cow's milk proteins.

Which plant-based milk should you choose?

There are many plant-based milks; here are the main benefits and drawbacks of the most common ones:

  • The benefits

Neutral in taste, rich in plant-based protein and fibre, rich in potassium, low in saturated fat

  • The downsides

No calcium; not recommended for children under 3 years of age or for pregnant women due to potential hormonal effects

  • The benefits

Easily digestible, no saturated fats, often fortified with calcium (we favour lithothamnion)

  • The downsides

Low in protein, not suitable for people with tree nut allergies, may contain carrageenan, which can cause digestive issues in some people

  • Pros

Easy to digest, with a mild sweetness that appeals particularly to children; suitable in cases of allergy to nuts and soya

  • Cons

Sweeter, lower in nutrients, low in protein

  • The upsides

High in fibre and carbohydrates, a great option for breakfast, perfect in lattes too

  • The downsides

Contains gluten, higher in calories

  • The pros

Fragrant, good fibre content, remineralising
