Everything you need to know about baby wraps & carriers

How do you carry your baby? What is a baby carrier? What is a baby wrap? Can both parents carry the baby? These are all questions that parents regularly ask themselves when their baby arrives.

Attention au portage non physiologique, qui peut être néfaste pour votre bébé mais également pour vous-même.

What are the benefits of babywearing for your baby?

Baby-wearing is thought to be particularly beneficial for babies with more intense needs, or those suffering from severe colic, and for premature babies — as a way of extending a pregnancy that ended too soon (fewer tears would also mean the baby has more energy to develop well, faster weight gain and fewer infections).

Baby carriers have a reassuring and soothing effect: at birth, your baby needs close contact to feel secure; in this respect, babywearing is a perfect complement to breastfeeding — it allows your baby to become familiar with their new environment while providing reassurance and closeness.

The baby carrier supports better digestion and reduces reflux, as your child is in an upright position.

Baby carriers may also help reduce crying in babies: an American study published in the journal Pediatrics found that carrying babies reduced their crying by an average of half in babies carried for 4 hours per day. Beyond the reassuring nature of being carried, the needs of a frequently carried baby (such as hunger or sleep) tend to be met more quickly on average, which may explain fewer and shorter crying episodes.

Baby carriers are thought to support healthy psychomotor development, and better neck and back tone through adaptation to movement and changes in position.

Baby carriers may also stimulate the balance system through constant rocking, as well as the nervous system (smells, sounds, faces at their level, discovering a new environment…).

What are the benefits of babywearing for parents?

For parents, babywearing offers two main benefits:
– Freedom of movement, the ability to go anywhere and carry out daily tasks while keeping baby close — who can sleep peacefully
– Babywearing is also thought to support parent-child bonding
While babywearing is beneficial for babies, not all baby carriers are equal. There is also a risk of carrying your baby incorrectly with a carrier that is not physiologically designed.

Did you know?

Une couche d’écharpe est égale à une couche de vêtements; couvrez donc bébé en conséquence pour qu’il n’ait ni trop chaud ni trop froid.

What is a non-"ergonomic" baby carrier? What should be avoided?

A non-"physio" baby carrier is one where:
– The baby has a single point of support at the crotch.
– The baby's legs are hanging down vertically, with no support, as if they were "suspended".
– The baby's back is straight and tense.
– The baby's hands are far from their face and they can barely bring them to their mouth.
– The baby is facing outward and not against you (facing front or back).

What is "physiological" babywearing?

It is a baby carrier in which:
– The baby is seated and crouched in the "frog" position; their pelvis is naturally tilted; they have good support on their pelvic bones
– Their legs are naturally spread apart and their pelvis is open; their knees are naturally raised to navel height
– The baby's back is slightly rounded, as in the foetal position
– Their back, hips and neck are supported by the fabric
– The baby can bring their hands to their mouth
– The baby can breathe easily and move their head freely; their chin is up
– The baby's head is secure and must not fall backwards; you should be able to kiss the top of their head without moving or stretching

What are the risks of non-physiological baby carrying?

A newborn's back muscles, cartilage and joints are still developing; rigid carrying that forces the back into an upright position can lead to poor spinal development.

Non-physiological carrying prevents proper hip bone alignment and can cause or worsen hip dysplasia; this could not only delay walking but also cause long-term pain, into adulthood

For the person carrying, aside from discomfort, regular poor carrying technique can damage the back. If you feel the straps pulling, your baby's legs dangling, and you have back pain, your position or carrying method is probably not suitable. Do not hesitate to seek advice from a babywearing consultant.

A few tips for safe babywearing

For safe babywearing, here are a few things to consider, in addition to the "physio" position:
– One layer of wrap fabric equals one layer of clothing; dress your baby accordingly so they are neither too hot nor too cold.
– Be attentive to your baby's needs and make sure to keep them well hydrated regularly, especially in warm weather.
– Make sure to cover your child's extremities to protect them from both the cold and the sun (be mindful of sunburn on the head, neck, and feet).

How to choose a baby carrier?

While it's true that not all baby carriers are equal, rather than favouring one brand over another, what matters most is checking your baby's position in the carrier. There is no such thing as an ideal baby carrier: it will depend on your baby's age and your needs (frequency of use, duration of carrying, etc.).

Here are a few criteria to consider when choosing your baby carrier:
– The baby carrier must be in good condition
– The baby carrier must be adjustable and adaptable
– Its fabric must be high quality, guaranteed free from heavy metals and toxic treatments (opt for organic fabrics and OEKO-TEX® or GOTS certified materials)

If your baby is under 4–6 months old (this varies from baby to baby), carry your baby in a stretchy wrap and avoid structured baby carriers. Some manufacturers of structured carriers sell their models with newborn adaptors. However, these are not truly ergonomic and only provide support at the crotch area.

On the other hand, if your baby is over 4 months old and you are heading out for a long walk or need to get on with things around the house, a structured baby carrier will be the most suitable option.

If you need a quick carrying solution — for example, to go up stairs — the ring sling is a fast option to put on (and can easily be stored in a bag or pushchair).

Please note that regardless of the carrier used, the "cradle hold" position should be avoided — that is, carrying your baby lying on their back (back against the fabric). When your child is not being breastfed, opt for an upright carry.

Also avoid "hammock"-style baby carriers if they are not adjustable.

What are the different types of baby carrier?

– The baby sling is the most versatile option, allowing you to carry your baby in several ways (front, side, back…).
– Ideal from birth.
– Carrying a baby in a sling does, however, require a certain technique and experience. Do not hesitate to seek advice from a (certified) babywearing instructor. Slings come in several lengths and fabrics.
– A stretchy woven sling is perfect when your baby is small, but less comfortable as they grow; it also requires several layers to support your child properly and must not become too loose (if the fabric becomes too slack, it should be replaced).
– A long sling is more versatile but also more difficult to handle.

Examples of baby slings: Baby wrap by JPMBB, Léo by Storchenwiege, Boba Wrap, or the Porte bébé by Studio Roméo if you want to combine babywearing and design

– The sling is the most physiological carrying method, as it provides genuine back support for the baby.
– It is easier to put on than a stretchy wrap, but requires asymmetric carrying on one shoulder (unless you use two slings).

Examples of slings: Little wrap without a knot by JPMBB or Bulline by Néobulle

– The structured baby carrier is very easy to set up and use.
– It is ideal if you need to put baby in and take them out frequently, but the adjustment options are limited.
– It should only be used once your child can sit up and naturally spreads their legs (around 4–6 months). Examples of structured baby carriers: Ergobaby, Manduca, Physiocarrier by JPMBB

The "Mei Tai" type of baby carrier is easier to use than wrap slings, and is highly adjustable in height and width, unlike a structured carrier — making it the "hybrid" option. Examples of Mei Tai carriers: the Didytai by Didymos, the Evolu'bulle by Néobulle, and the Babycarrier by Storchenwiege.

– The hammock carrier is easy to set up and takes up little space.
– It is suitable when the baby is older and carrying is for short periods.
– The carry is also asymmetric, and it remains less physiological for the baby than a wrap or sling.

Please be careful not to carry your baby in the "cradle" position and not to use a non-adjustable sling.

To conclude

Carrying your baby has many advantages: you can go about your daily activities more easily, and the emotional and physical benefits are numerous. If you are just starting out, seek advice from a babywearing consultant to help you position your baby correctly and choose the right physiological carrying method, suited to your child and your needs. Don't hesitate to find out more during your pregnancy or attend a workshop with a certified consultant before the birth. Like breastfeeding, babywearing does not come naturally. It should always be a pleasure, and never painful.
