Cosmetics: which ones to choose during pregnancy?

Benzophenone, BHA, EDTA, Paraffinum liquidum, Petrolatum, Parabens, PEG, Phenoxyethanol, Phthalates, Silicone, Triclosan… lengthy ingredient lists can quickly make your head spin! So how do you make sense of them?

Contents

Expecting a child is a great adventure that turns everyday life upside down. It often marks a turning point in consumption habits. We now know how critical the first 1,000 days are for a child's long-term health.

Because a child's healthy development is a priority, it becomes necessary to be wary of certain ingredients. Yet products from the conventional cosmetics industry rarely indicate contraindications for pregnant women. To sort through and eliminate harmful products as much as possible, it is first necessary to understand the ingredients.

Take care mama

Use apps and read the labels to make the right choices for your cosmetics.

What are the components of a cosmetic product?

A cosmetic product is always made up of three main types of ingredients.

First and foremost, you will find the active ingredients that deliver the desired effect on the skin, such as hydration or anti-ageing action.

Next come the excipients, which are essential for protecting the properties of the active ingredients and preventing their degradation.

Finally, a range of additives may be added, such as preservatives, texturing agents, colourings or fragrances.

And what about the role of water?

Water is very often present in cosmetic products. However, it can be a source of bacterial proliferation. To address this, preservatives are incorporated into creams, gels, emulsions, lotions and mousses. Conversely, bacterial proliferation is less common in water-free products. That said, it is essential to keep these products dry, which is why it is important to let your solid products dry properly between each use!

So what should be avoided?

Today, the most controversial ingredients are often excipients and additives. Although preservatives and UV filters are essential, some prove to be harmful as they are in fact endocrine disruptors. Furthermore, the texturisers and excipients most commonly used in the conventional cosmetics industry can be derived from petrochemicals, making them neither environmentally friendly nor good for our health. Finally, beware of microplastics!

Also be aware of cosmetic supplements, as they are rarely the best pregnancy food supplements as they very often contain plants that are not compatible.

Tools for an initial sort

Sort it yourself

To eliminate as many harmful ingredients as possible, a number of apps allow you to carry out initial screenings. Among them, the Mireille app is highly effective. Completely independent, it was co-created by a biologist and allows you to assess cosmetics simply by scanning them. The INCI Beauty app is also very effective, and certain websites such as La vérité sur les cosmétiques can help you see things more clearly.

Is this screening sufficient for a pregnant woman?

No, this initial screening is effective but does not take into account contraindications for pregnant women. In addition to this selection, you would ideally also need to avoid other ingredients such as products containing synthetic fragrances and certain essential oils. The list can quickly become long and the task complicated for a mum-to-be.

Did you know?

The Cosmos label is applied to products containing as little as 20% organic ingredients in total…

What are the specific contraindications for pregnant women?

Today, the situation of pregnant women is given very little consideration in European regulations, particularly within Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Products designated as suitable for all audiences give the misleading impression that they are equally appropriate for pregnant women. Only additional tests are required for products intended for children under 3 years of age. There is also no platform or resource bringing together all the data and contraindications related to maternity.

Specific contraindications for pregnant women must be taken into account. For example, retinol, also known as vitamin A, must be avoided as it is teratogenic, meaning it can interfere with the proper development of the foetus and thus cause malformations in the baby. In addition, every stage of maternity and pregnancy is different and requires particular care.

You hear all sorts of conflicting opinions about essential oils. For the sake of simplicity, they are often entirely prohibited during pregnancy. Yet some essential oils are perfectly compatible with pregnancy — such as citrus oils — even when used neat (provided the indicated dosages are respected). On the other hand, essential oils such as palmarosa or peppermint, for example, should be strictly avoided. For greater clarity, do not hesitate to consult the work of the leading authority on the subject, Danièle Festy. Finally, it is worth knowing that most recommendations are given for neat use, whereas in cosmetic products, essential oils are present in very small amounts (generally less than 1% of the total formula), which further limits any "risks".

In recent years, an increasing number of so-called organic and accessible cosmetics have appeared on the market — but is this really the answer? Organic certification guarantees stricter standards, such as the use of natural ingredients, the exclusion of certain chemical components, and respect for the environment. That said, beware of greenwashing and misleading claims. Look out for recognised labels such as Ecocert and Cosmos.

Organic is better, but it is not a guarantee of a safe product. It is worth knowing that for the Cosmos label, for example, only a minimum of 20% of the total composition needs to be organic. It is therefore equally important to choose products with at least 50% organic composition. Finally, the cost of these certifications should not be overlooked: an artisan, locally made product may meet the same standards without carrying these labels. Opting for artisan products with natural, minimal ingredient lists could therefore also be a viable solution.

Summer is here and the question of sun cream is bound to come up, isn't it? There is very little innovation in this area, making it virtually impossible today to find a sun cream with a truly clean formulation. Even when it is not stated, there may still be nanoparticles, for example. That said, do watch out for pregnancy mask! UV protection (both UVB and UVA) should not be overlooked either, as pregnancy is the most vulnerable period. The best approach is to find the right balance between efficacy and formulation. When choosing a sun cream, it is preferable to avoid so-called chemical organic filters and opt for mineral filters instead. And of course, it goes without saying that the best thing is to avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially during the hours when the sun is at its strongest!

And how do you make life simpler?

Some online shops specialise in products suited to pregnant women. Mamakya is one such example, where all products have been selected and reviewed by a biologist. Particular attention is paid to essential oils. Products are also categorised according to the different stages of motherhood: 1st trimester, 2nd & 3rd trimesters of pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
