Pourquoi prendre du collagène marin enceinte ?

Why take marine collagen during pregnancy?

Contents

During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes many changes — skin stretching, joint pain, increased fatigue… These changes place significant demands on the connective tissues and skin. Marine collagen, known for its properties of suppleness and resilience, plays a central role in health during this time.
But can collagen be taken safely during pregnancy? What are its specific benefits during this period? This article draws on recent scientific data and reliable sources to determine whether collagen is a pregnancy supplement of choice.

Did you know?

From the age of 25, the natural production of collagen declines.

What is collagen and why is everyone talking about it?

Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body: it accounts for approximately 25% of total proteins. It makes up the skin, muscles, bones, tendons and even blood vessels. There are 29 known types of collagen, each with different functions. Among the most important are types I (skin, tendons, ligaments, bones, teeth, fibrocartilage), II and III. Type I collagen is the most abundant in the body [1].

Its mission? To give elasticity, firmness and cohesion to our tissues.

However, from the age of 25, natural collagen production decreases by approximately 1.5% per year, and by the age of 35, we have already lost nearly 20% of our reserves [2].

Various factors can also accelerate the breakdown of collagen, including sun exposure, smoking, pollution and certain hormones.

Why collagen is important during pregnancy

1. Supporting the skin against stretch marks

During pregnancy, the skin stretches rapidly, particularly around the abdomen, thighs, and chest. This can lead to the appearance of stretch marks when the dermis develops small tears.
Taking a marine collagen supplement during pregnancy helps to maintain the skin's elasticity and resilience, thereby limiting the appearance of stretch marks.

At the same time, a good intake of vitamin C supports the natural synthesis of collagen and further strengthens this protection.

Its efficacy has notably been demonstrated with a daily intake of 2.5 g, with significant results from 8 weeks and optimal results at 12 weeks. Its benefits relate to skin firmness and elasticity [3]. Two further studies, using a daily intake of 3 g of collagen, showed a notable improvement in skin elasticity and hydration [4].

"I started using Mamaload from my 4th month of pregnancy and noticed a clear improvement in my skin's elasticity. I didn't get a single stretch mark despite going a week overdue. In the postpartum period, my skin had almost regained its original firmness within 1 month." (Hannauer)

2. Supporting cervical flexibility and mother-baby exchanges

Collagen plays a key role in the cervix, which must remain firm throughout pregnancy and then become soft and stretchy at the time of delivery.
It also plays a role in the exchanges between the mother and the foetus, by supporting the cohesion and healthy development of placental tissue [5]. It is therefore essential for health.

3. Relieving joint pain

The hormone relaxin, released during pregnancy, relaxes the ligaments and prepares the pelvis for childbirth. This can cause joint pain in the knees, hips, or wrists.
Collagen, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and restorative properties, helps to support the joints and limit these discomforts [6].

Laetitia, customer: "I tried Deca mama because, being pregnant, I started experiencing joint pain in my hands (a pregnancy symptom I had never heard of before). After a month of the course, I noticed the difference — I no longer wake up at night with the pain and the inability to close my hands."

4. Improving sleep and reducing fatigue

Collagen is rich in glycine, an amino acid that acts as a calming neuromediator. Studies have shown that glycine promotes deeper, more restorative sleep, which is particularly beneficial during the third trimester or in the postpartum period [7]. Collagen is composed of approximately one third glycine.

Take care mama

Collagen is not just about beauty — it also has genuine health benefits.

What are the benefits after childbirth?

After birth, collagen remains a precious ally and can be taken as a post-partum supplement for several months.

  • For wound healing : it supports tissue repair after a caesarean section or a natural tear [8].
  • For postpartum hair loss : collagen helps strengthen the keratin in hair, limiting the frequent hair loss experienced during this period. According to one study, taking 2.5 g of marine collagen per day supports hair growth by stimulating hair follicle cell proliferation by 31%, whilst visibly improving hair thickness and density [9]. It is a hair loss food supplement top choice.
  • For nails. One study notably showed that taking 2.5 g of hydrolysed collagen supports a 12% increase in nail growth rate and a 42% reduction in the frequency of broken nails [10].
  • For joints and muscle recovery: collagen peptides support muscle recovery and joint comfort.

If you are breastfeeding, collagen is also a breastfeeding-compatible food supplement

Marie, customer: I started taking collagen after my second birth and my postpartum experience was completely different. I feel like I recovered much better, my skin really regained its elasticity — it was genuinely remarkable. I also noticed a difference in my hair.

Collagen in the diet: the best natural sources

Collagen is a protein of exclusively animal origin. It is found in connective tissues, skin, bones and cartilage.

It is found mainly in:

  • Bone broths (chicken, beef, fish): long cooking allows collagen to be extracted from bones and cartilage.
  • Chicken or fish skin, particularly rich in type I collagen.
  • Gelatinous cuts such as oxtail, knuckles, and pigs' trotters.
  • Fish bones and heads, often used in fish stocks.
  • Food-grade gelatine, derived from the processing of collagen.

Bonus: bone broth Mama Poule contains around 6 g of collagen per serving!

The body produces its own collagen from amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline). But for this synthesis to be optimal, certain nutrients are essential.

Vitamin C plays an essential role in stabilising the structure of collagen. Without it, production is insufficient. Zinc actively contributes to the production and repair of tissues. As collagen is a protein, an adequate overall protein intake is essential, especially during pregnancy.

Anna: "The broth helps to regain strength and heal better. Even outside of childbirth, I find it nourishing and precious for the skin on your face and body — like an 'anti-ageing treatment'. Because beauty is nurtured from the inside out, with good collagen and revitalising minerals."

How can you consume marine collagen safely during pregnancy?

Opt for hydrolysed marine collagen

Hydrolysed collagen peptides (in powder or drink form) are the most effective.

Marine collagen has a low molecular weight, generally between 2,000 and 5,000 Daltons, which facilitates its passage into the bloodstream and its use by tissues (skin, ligaments, uterus, etc.) [11].

Benefits of marine collagen:

Good digestive tolerance

Excellent absorption

High antioxidant properties thanks to glycine and proline

Suitable for red meat-free diets

Please be aware that if you have a fish allergy, you should not consume any supplement containing marine collagen.

The dose

Studies show that a daily dose of 2.5 to 5g of collagen peptides is sufficient for skin and hair, with a low molecular weight collagen, whilst 10g may be beneficial for joints.

There is no benefit in taking more: it is consistency that counts. Benefits generally appear after 8 to 12 weeks of continuous use.

The composition

We avoid food supplements containing:

additives, artificial flavourings or colourings;

intense sweeteners or plants not recommended during pregnancy.

Instead, we favour a pure formula, containing only:

hydrolysed collagen peptides,

natural vitamin C (which supports collagen synthesis),

fruit powders or natural flavourings, with no added sugars.

It is recommended that you speak to your midwife or gynaecologist before starting any supplementation, especially if you are already following another treatment.

At Jolly Mama, we use a low molecular weight collagen (2,000 Da), which ensures optimal absorption by the body. Our collagen is primarily type 1. This marine collagen is extracted from fish sourced through sustainable fishing, from which collagen peptides are extracted. It is certified FRIEND OF THE SEA®.

One serving of our collagen supplement peach flavour provides 3g of collagen, supported by scientific studies. Our products are also rich in natural vitamin C. Also available in cocoa, coffee (caffeine-free) and neutral flavours.

And for an extra treat, our Banana glow snack with chocolate chips and banana also contains 3g of our collagen.

Possible side effects and precautions

Collagen is generally well tolerated, including during pregnancy, as it simply provides amino acids naturally present in the body. However, like any food supplement, it may cause mild digestive discomfort in some people at the start of use: bloating, a feeling of heaviness, nausea or intestinal discomfort. These effects are often temporary and disappear after a few days of adjustment.

It is recommended to stop supplementation and consult a healthcare professional if any unusual reactions occur, such as skin rashes, itching, persistent digestive issues or allergic reactions, particularly in the case of a known fish allergy (for marine collagen).

Conclusion

Marine collagen for pregnant women is a natural and safe ally. It contributes to maintaining skin elasticity, reducing joint discomfort, improving sleep and supporting postpartum recovery.

While it does not replace a balanced diet, it represents a valuable supplement to support women's bodies during this demanding period.

Alix d'Antras, Naturopath specialising in fertility, pregnancy and hormonal disorders:

"Pregnancy is a period that demands great adaptation from the body: tissues stretch, ligaments soften and the body gently prepares for childbirth. It is in this context that collagen, the main component of connective tissues, plays a central role. Naturally supporting its production through a diet rich in quality proteins, vitamin C, zinc and minerals such as potassium or magnesium helps the body through its physiological changes. The same applies in the postpartum period, when needs remain high to address the two key challenges of this time: recovery and tissue repair."
