Choline Supplement: supporting your intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Choline is a nutrient that has long been overshadowed by vitamin B9, yet it plays a key role from the moment you start trying for a baby, and throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. In the UK, intakes are often below recommended levels, and it is rare for a standard pregnancy supplement to contain enough. A choline-based food supplement helps to secure these intakes at the time when needs are at their highest.

In this collection, you will find Choline Mama, our dedicated capsule formula providing 370 mg of choline through the patented VitacholineTM bitartrate, chosen for its absorption profile. Our maternity multivitamins, such as Bump essentials or Baby Bump, also contain it in a complementary way. On each product page, you can check the composition, dosage, format, price, reviews and delivery, for a simple and transparent purchase.

Depending on the stage, choline combines well with other nutrients. When trying to conceive and during pregnancy, it works in synergy with vitamin B9. During breastfeeding, it supports the DHA intake transmitted through breast milk. This is the whole benefit of thinking by stage of maternity rather than nutrient by nutrient.

Key takeaway: choline needs rise to 480 mg per day during pregnancy and 520 mg during breastfeeding, while women in France consume around 291 mg per day on average. The bitartrate form is the best suited to pregnancy, and consistency of the course matters more than intensity.

Choline during maternity

Choline is an essential nutrient, particularly important during maternity. It serves as a source of methyl groups useful at many stages of metabolism. The body uses it to produce phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, two major components of cell membranes, and to produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory, mood and muscle control. The liver synthesises some of it, but this production is generally not sufficient to meet the body's needs, which is why dietary intake or supplementation can be beneficial.

When trying to conceive, choline is often mentioned alongside vitamin B9, which doctors recommend from the moment a pregnancy is desired. It is involved in the methylation cycle and is the subject of research into reducing the risk of neural tube defects. Studies have observed a lower risk in women whose peri-conceptional intakes were close to recommended levels. Starting to take care of your choline intake before conception therefore makes good sense.

During pregnancy, requirements increase and reach 480 mg per day according to EFSA. Choline contributes to the regulation of homocysteine, an important marker for a healthy pregnancy. Choline status during the first half of pregnancy has been associated, in several studies, with the child's cognitive development. As it is rare for a standard pregnancy supplement to provide enough, it may be useful to specifically supplement your intake.

Requirements remain high during breastfeeding, at around 520 mg per day. The choline content of breast milk depends largely on the mother's diet. Choline and DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, work in complementarity for the brain and visual development of the breastfed baby. Here again, few post-partum supplements cover these elevated needs, so a dedicated intake can help to secure them.

EFSA reference values are 400 mg per day for women, 480 mg during pregnancy and 520 mg during breastfeeding. In France, average intake is around 291 mg per day, which is well below these levels. If you eat few eggs and little poultry, an additional intake may be relevant. For advice tailored to your situation, consult your midwife or doctor.

Choline is found mainly in eggs: a 50 g hard-boiled egg provides around 115 mg. Salmon, liver, and chicken are also good sources, with approximately 85 mg per 100 g of roasted chicken. On the plant-based side, quinoa, cauliflower, broccoli, and almonds contain smaller amounts. Reaching 480 mg per day through diet alone would require, for example, three to four eggs daily, which can be difficult to sustain throughout a pregnancy.

Choline is available in several forms: bitartrate, chloride (less well absorbed), phosphatidylcholine (which acts primarily at the hepatic level and on lipids), and citicoline. Bitartrate is the reference form during pregnancy: well absorbed, it participates in the methylation cycle and in the regulation of homocysteine, in connection with vitamin B9 metabolism. This is the form, via the patented Vitacholine™, that we have chosen for Choline Mama.

Citicoline is not, strictly speaking, choline, and it is not recommended during pregnancy. Choline bitartrate, on the other hand, is compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding, and remains the preferred form for mothers-to-be and new mothers. This is why our maternity formulas are based on bitartrate rather than citicoline.

Understanding choline and its benefits during the maternity period

Why choline requirements increase during pregnancy

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are the periods when the demand for choline is at its highest, as this nutrient is involved in the construction of cell membranes and in the early development of the baby's brain. The body produces some of it in the liver, but this synthesis is not sufficient to meet needs that can rise to 480 mg per day during pregnancy. Since the majority of pregnancy supplements contain none or too little, a targeted intake makes particular sense at this precise time.

Choline, vitamin B9 and DHA: complementary intakes

Choline does not work alone. With vitamin B9, it contributes to the methylation cycle and to the regulation of homocysteine, two mechanisms studied in connection with the healthy progression of pregnancy. With DHA, a key omega-3 for brain and visual development, they form a duo often cited in relation to the breastfed baby. Thinking about these intakes together, rather than in isolation, helps to build a consistent routine throughout the whole maternity journey.

Choosing the right choline supplement

To compare two products, three key markers are useful: the form of choline (the bitartrate is the reference during pregnancy), the dosage actually provided per serving, and the quality of the raw material. Our Choline Mama formula is based on the patented Vitacholine™ bitartrate and provides 370 mg of choline in two capsules, which covers a large proportion of a pregnant woman's daily needs. The table below sets out the EFSA-recommended intakes, useful for contextualising a dosage.

Reference intake for choline (EFSA): Adult woman = 400 mg per day / Pregnancy = 480 mg per day / Breastfeeding = 520 mg per day / Average intake in France = approximately 291 mg per day

Did you know: a 50g hard-boiled egg provides approximately 115 mg of choline. To meet the 480 mg daily requirement during pregnancy through diet alone, you would need the equivalent of three to four eggs per day, on top of a varied diet.

Mama tip: think of choline like vitamin B9 — start from the moment you plan for a baby and continue throughout. A regular course, started early and maintained through pregnancy and breastfeeding, makes more sense than a one-off high-dose intake.

If you are currently on a course of treatment, have a medical history, or a known condition, remain alert to possible interactions and the precautions indicated on each product page. A food supplement supports a healthy lifestyle and a varied diet — it does not replace them.
