FAQ on anti-nausea remedies during pregnancy

A few tips can help you manage this period more easily:

  • Have small, frequent snacks rather than large meals, eat slowly and only when hungry. Drink between meals rather than with them.
  • Limit fatty foods and favour complex carbohydrates.
  • Protein is very effective, particularly in liquid form, for reducing stomach upset. Don't hesitate to have protein-rich snacks or drinks throughout the day, or as soon as you feel nausea coming on. For example, a collagen food supplement in powder form is an excellent way to consume protein in liquid form.
  • Avoid smells that may trigger nausea.
  • Ginger is a well-known natural remedy for pregnancy nausea whose benefits have been scientifically proven.
  • Taking your pregnancy food supplement preferably in powder form to be diluted in water rather than capsules, which can be difficult to swallow and may increase nausea.

Ginger is a well-known natural traditional remedy for its soothing effect on nausea. This is no myth — numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing this symptom. Always seek advice from your doctor or the healthcare professional looking after you, as some ginger-based supplements will not be suitable and may be harmful to health. You can consume it in reasonable amounts as part of your diet.

Vitamin B6 is commonly used as a first-line treatment for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. It is associated with a reduction in nausea. However, the doses used in studies are generally very high — do not supplement without guidance and always seek advice from your doctor. In food, it can be found in herbs (mint, rosemary, basil), turkey, seeds, salmon, nuts and more. The pregnancy vitamins generally contain some.

We don't yet know exactly all the mechanisms behind nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, but several causes have been identified. A history of travel sickness or migraines, as well as family history (your mother may have experienced it during her own pregnancy, for example), can also be risk factors. The normal hormonal changes of pregnancy are also involved, as is the thyroid, along with certain deficiencies (particularly in B vitamins). There appears to be a specific link between the hCG hormone and nausea and vomiting, as a peak in this hormone is observed at the time when nausea is most intense. This hormone stimulates the thyroid in response to the foetus's needs. In cases of iodine deficiency, iodine is directed primarily to the foetus at the expense of the mother. When iodine is plentiful, pregnancy nausea may be a consequence of undiminished embryonic demands. Nausea could therefore be an indicator of thyroid function.
Another hypothesis is that your body is protecting itself from harmful foods that may be contaminated with toxins or bacteria.

There is no universal timeframe, but in general you should start feeling better in the second trimester. According to research, 50% of pregnant women will see their symptoms disappear by week 14, whilst 10% of pregnant women will still be experiencing them beyond week 22.

There are several ways to manage eating well despite vomiting.

  • To help reduce symptoms, it is important to favour small, frequent snacks rather than large meals. This helps avoid arriving at mealtimes ravenous, overeating, or experiencing blood sugar fluctuations — all of which are known triggers for nausea.
  • Prioritise protein at mealtimes, as it helps to settle the stomach and provides good nourishment. Have some first thing in the morning, especially if you experience morning nausea. You might consider taking one of the prenatal vitamins, which will give you an extra boost of nutrients and help prevent deficiencies.

Avoid capsules, which require drinking a large amount of water quickly and can trigger vomiting. Opt for powder formats instead, such as the Bump powder supplement, which are better tolerated, or the anti-nausea pregnancy supplement Bye bye nausea to help relieve persistent nausea.

Nausea can be a perfectly normal symptom during pregnancy, just as not experiencing it can also be normal. Some studies have even suggested it may be a good sign — they found that nausea was strongly associated with a reduced risk of miscarriage. This could be because the body is protecting us from ingredients that might make us unwell and pass bacteria to the baby.

Please note that if you do not have nausea, this does not mean your pregnancy will not be healthy; and if your nausea stops, this does not mean you are at risk of pregnancy loss. Do not hesitate to see your doctor and ensure you are well monitored, particularly if you are suffering fromhyperemesis gravidarum, the severe form of nausea and vomiting. If you notice any weight loss, we recommend consulting your doctor.
