Children's dietary supplement: vitamin D and omega-3 every day

In children, a varied and balanced diet remains the foundation and covers most everyday nutritional needs. Two nutrients, however, receive particular attention in France: vitamin D, which the skin produces mainly through sun exposure, and long-chain omega-3s such as DHA, which are not well represented in many diets. This collection brings together two formulas designed for children and reviews what the official sources say.

In this collection, you will find Sunny Baby, our vitamin D3 of plant origin in drops, providing 400 IU (10 µg) per dose, and Omega Kids, our omega-3 with DHA from microalgae, fish-free and odourless, with 125 mg of DHA per dose. Both formulas are vegan and made in France, and are presented here for children from 3 years of age. On each product page, you can check the composition, dosage, format, price, reviews and delivery.

Vitamin D supports bone growth and development, while DHA contributes to normal brain function and the maintenance of normal vision. Under 3 years of age, supplementation for infants and young children must be carried out under medical supervision.

Key takeaway: vitamin D is largely synthesised by the skin through sun exposure, which explains more limited intake in winter and the supplementation recommendations for children in France. DHA, meanwhile, contributes to normal brain function and the maintenance of normal vision at an intake of 250 mg per day. Under 3 years of age, any supplementation requires medical advice.

FAQ - Vitamin D and omega-3 in children

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin produced mainly by the skin upon exposure to sunlight. European health claims recognise that it is necessary for normal growth and bone development in children, that it contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, and to the normal functioning of the immune system. It is one of the most closely monitored nutrients during childhood.

As it depends primarily on skin synthesis, vitamin D levels vary with the season, sunlight exposure, latitude, and time spent outdoors. Intake is often lower in winter, and diet alone provides very little. For this reason, vitamin D is the subject of official supplementation recommendations for children in France. For infants and children under 3 years of age, this supplementation falls under medical supervision.

DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. It is one of the major components of the brain and the retina. European-level approved health claims indicate that DHA contributes to normal brain function and the maintenance of normal vision, for a daily intake of 250 mg. It is found mainly in oily fish and certain microalgae.

Our Sunny Baby and Omega Kids formulas are presented on this page for use from the age of 3. Supplementation with vitamins and minerals for infants (0–1 year) and toddlers (1–3 years) should be carried out under medical supervision. If you have any questions or your child is currently receiving treatment, please seek advice from your doctor, paediatrician, pharmacist, or midwife.

Vitamin D comes mainly from sunlight, and then from a few foods: oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel and herring, egg yolk, and cod liver oil. DHA is found in these same oily fish and in microalgae. Plant-based sources such as flaxseeds, walnuts or chia provide ALA, an omega-3 that the body converts to DHA at a rate of only 1 to 5%.

There are two forms of vitamin D: D2 (ergocalciferol), which is plant-based, and D3 (cholecalciferol). D3 is generally considered more effective at raising and maintaining vitamin D status. It is now possible to obtain a plant-based vitamin D3 — this is the choice made for Sunny Baby, which is vegan and suitable for families who avoid animal products.

DHA supplements fall into two main families: those based on fish oil, often higher in dosage but not vegan, and those based on microalgae (schizochytrium), which are vegan, fish-free and odourless. For a child, the absence of odour often makes it easier to take. In both cases, the absence of pollutants verified by testing remains a criterion to check. Omega Kids relies on microalgae DHA.

A few guidelines can help you compare. Opt for a formulation suited to your child's age, such as drops that are easy to administer. Check that the age range indicated matches your child's age, look at the origin and quality of the ingredients, as well as a short ingredient list with no unnecessary additives. The dosage must be clearly indicated, and a supplement is no substitute for a varied diet.

In a healthy child with no particular dietary restrictions, a varied plate covers most nutritional needs, from iron to magnesium. Stacking intake with a general multivitamin therefore has little real benefit. Every child is different, and their needs evolve with their pace, appetite and the seasons. The nutrient intakes most often considered insufficient in the UK relate primarily to two areas: vitamin D, whose synthesis through the skin decreases in winter, and DHA, when oily fish is rarely on the menu. For vitality as well as immunity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep and physical activity remain the most important levers.

Rather than a general-purpose pack combining many active ingredients, we chose to focus on the two nutrients most commonly lacking in children. The other nutrients are largely found in a varied diet, whereas these two depend on more variable factors — sunlight for one, fish consumption for the other. This is also why deficiencies or limited intakes are sometimes specifically mentioned for these nutrients. Sunny Baby and Omega Kids are available individually, so you can adjust according to each family's needs.

Understanding vitamin D and omega-3s in children's development

Why vitamin D deserves particular attention in children

Vitamin D has a particular characteristic: it depends largely on synthesis by the skin, triggered by sunlight. Depending on the season, the region and the time spent outdoors, this production varies considerably, and diet alone is not sufficient to make up the difference. ANSES has set nutritional reference values for vitamin D and notes that population intakes are often below these levels. It is this observation that justifies, in France, recommendations for supplementation in children, under medical supervision for those under 3 years of age.

The role of DHA in brain and vision development

DHA is one of the most studied omega-3s for development. It is a major component of brain and retinal membranes, as summarised by the EU-recognised health claim: it contributes to normal brain function and the maintenance of normal vision, for an intake of 250 mg per day. However, the body converts plant-based omega-3s very poorly — only 1 to 5% of the ALA from flaxseeds, walnuts or chia is converted into DHA. As oily fish is often underrepresented in children's diets, the gap with recommended intakes can widen.

Did you know: the body converts only around 1 to 5% of plant-based omega-3s (the ALA from flaxseeds, walnuts or chia) into DHA. These foods remain useful, but cannot replace a direct source of DHA.

Mama tip: for a child who doesn't like fish, or in a vegetarian family, a formula with DHA from microalgae provides this omega-3 without fish and without any smell, in just a few drops.

A food supplement does not replace a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Follow the dosages and age ranges indicated on each product page. For children under 3 years of age, or in the case of ongoing treatment or a relevant medical history, medical supervision is required.
