A key everyday mineral

Magnesium contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue and to the normal functioning of the nervous system — a real support when motherhood calls on your energy.

Found in food

Seeds, nuts, dark chocolate, wholegrains and legumes are among the foods richest in magnesium.

Several forms available

Magnesium bisglycinate, glycerophosphate or citrate — choose according to your tolerance and current needs.

Origin and description

Magnesium is an essential mineral, one of the most abundant in the human body.

It is involved in hundreds of reactions in the body, from energy metabolism to the functioning of the nervous system and muscles. The body cannot produce it on its own: intake therefore comes from diet, and sometimes from a supplement. Magnesium requirements can increase at certain stages of life, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding or the postpartum period, when the body is under considerable demand. Meeting your daily magnesium intake thus contributes to overall balance, at every stage of motherhood.

In its natural form, magnesium is found in many foods, with highly variable levels. The richest sources are seeds, such as pumpkin seeds, nuts like almonds and cashews, dark chocolate, wholegrains such as buckwheat or oats, as well as legumes and green vegetables. Some mineral waters also provide it. Its absorption depends on the food matrix, cooking and refining, which depletes grains. In practice, meeting your needs through diet alone can sometimes be difficult, especially during the more demanding periods of motherhood.

Indicative values from the Ciqual table (ANSES).

As a reference, the nutritional reference value for magnesium is 375 mg per day, and a 30 g handful of almonds provides around 80 mg.

  • Pumpkin seeds: around 500 mg per 100 g
  • Almonds: around 270 mg per 100 g
  • Cashews: around 250 mg per 100 g
  • Buckwheat: around 230 mg per 100 g
  • Dark chocolate (70% cocoa): around 200 mg per 100 g
  • Oats: around 140 mg per 100 g

As a supplement, when diet is not enough, a supplement can help maintain a regular magnesium intake. Not all forms are equal in terms of absorption and tolerance: the magnesium bisglycinate, a chelated form known for being gentle, the magnesium glycerophosphate, found in our snacks, or the magnesium citrate, a soluble form that is well absorbed, each have their advantages. Other forms exist, such as marine magnesium or magnesium oxide, which are sometimes less well tolerated. The choice depends mainly on your digestive tolerance and personal preferences. You can find them all in our magnesium supplements.

Magnesium intake, requirements and deficiency

The nutritional reference value is 375 mg of elemental magnesium per day. Requirements may be higher during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Insufficient intake, sometimes referred to as magnesium deficiency or low magnesium (hypomagnesaemia), can be difficult to assess on your own, as the signs are not specific. Several studies highlight that a proportion of the population does not reach the recommended intake, which is why a varied diet, supplemented where needed, is important.

When diet is not enough, food supplements offer different magnesium salts, in capsules, tablets or powder form. Their bioavailability varies from one form to another. Spreading intake throughout the day and good digestive tolerance often matter more than the quantity shown on the label alone. For your health, it is best to choose a form suited to your situation and tolerance.

Why is magnesium your ally throughout motherhood?

  • Less fatigue

Magnesium contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue — a welcome support when nights are short and days are full.

  • A supported nervous system

Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system, helping you move through moments of tension with greater calm.

  • Muscle comfort

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function — a useful support when the body is put under great demand throughout motherhood.

  • Everyday energy

Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to support the sometimes demanding pace of life as a mum.

  • Preserved balance

Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and electrolyte balance — precious during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

How does it work? (The science bit)

Once ingested, magnesium is absorbed in the intestine, in a proportion that varies according to the form, the dose and the rest of the meal. The body finely regulates its reserves, stored largely in the bones and muscles, and eliminates any surplus. This is why a regular intake, spread throughout the day, is often more beneficial than a large amount taken all at once.

In the body, magnesium contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal muscle function, normal psychological function and electrolyte balance. These roles can be particularly meaningful during pregnancy and the postpartum period, two stages when the body draws heavily on its resources. Magnesium is also often associated with vitamin B6, as part of a varied diet.

Key takeaway: Magnesium is an essential mineral found in many foods, from seeds and nuts to dark chocolate. It contributes to the reduction of tiredness and to the normal functioning of the nervous system and muscles. As a supplement, several forms are available, to be chosen according to your tolerance.

Your questions, our answers.

Pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, dark chocolate, buckwheat and oats are among the best sources. Legumes, green vegetables and certain mineral waters also contribute. Varying these foods throughout the week remains the best way to support your magnesium intake, as part of a balanced diet.

It all depends on your tolerance and preferences. Magnesium bisglycinate is renowned for being very gentle on digestion, glycerophosphate lends itself to indulgent snacks, and citrate is a soluble form that is convenient to dissolve. Marine magnesium and magnesium oxide are sometimes less well tolerated. If in doubt, a well-absorbed and comfortable form is often a good starting point.

Magnesium needs can increase during pregnancy, a time when the body is under considerable demand. Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue — welcome support during these particular months. A varied diet remains the foundation, supplemented where needed by a suitable form. As every pregnancy is unique, always adapt your intake to your own situation.

Spreading your intake throughout the day is often better absorbed than taking a large dose all at once. Many mamas incorporate magnesium into their evening routine, as a moment of relaxation. Consistency is key, ideally alongside a diet rich in magnesium. The format — powder, capsule or snack — is a matter of choosing whatever fits most naturally into your daily life.

At recommended intakes, magnesium is well tolerated. At high doses, certain forms such as magnesium oxide can have a laxative effect and speed up transit. By staying within the indicated amounts and choosing a well-absorbed form, these effects remain limited. As every body responds differently, adjust according to how you feel and your own tolerance.

Magnesium should be taken within a reasonable intake, without exceeding the indicated amounts. At high doses, certain forms may speed up transit. If you are on medication, have a kidney condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, seek advice from a healthcare professional before starting a supplement. A magnesium supplement supports a healthy lifestyle, without replacing it.
