FAQ on boosting lactation

Here are some tips on how to boost your milk supply that generally help new mothers a great deal:

An increase in the frequency of feeds (sometimes you may double or even triple the number). The more your baby feeds, the more milk your body will produce.

Feed on demand without watching the clock, for several minutes for as long as your baby wishes.

Compress your mammary gland whilst your baby is actively suckling. This helps to stimulate the breasts and boost milk transfer.

Stimulate breast drainage by using a breast pump after feeds for a few minutes.

Encourage skin-to-skin contact.

Consume galactagogue foods that support lactation.

Monitor your baby's weight gain and the number of wet nappies. This is a good indicator of whether your baby is getting enough feeds. For weight gain, seek advice from an IBCLC consultant. The weight curve of a breastfed baby differs from that of one who is not.

No, they are not essential for breastfeeding. A mother's body is made to breastfeed — we are mammals, let's not forget that! These ingredients can be useful for giving mums a lactation boost, particularly in cases of fatigue or stress, but they are by no means a miracle remedy if all the right conditions for successful breastfeeding are not in place (frequent feeds, good latch, effective breast attachment and suckling, etc.). What's more, every mother is different: one may need them, another may not, and yet another may need a different dose altogether.

No, you do not need to take galactagogues straight after birth, particularly to avoid engorgement. Putting baby to the breast is the best way to encourage your milk to come in.

Several ingredients are well known for their potential to increase mothers' milk production. The benefits of moringa are widely recognised — it is the ingredient recommended by IBCLC professionals for its proven efficacy on mothers' milk production. It is found in Mama moonies snacks (formerly Milk moonies) and Moringa Mama capsules.

Fennel is also worth mentioning — it should be avoided in food supplements and care should be taken not to consume too much of it.

Fenugreek is a plant that has long been used to stimulate breast milk production and support recovery after birth.

Ingredients such as oats, flaxseeds and brewer's yeast also have proven efficacy. They are included in our cookie mix to boost your milk supply in a truly indulgent way.

Before consuming these galactagogue ingredients, check with a healthcare professional to ensure they will be relevant and useful in your case, and to establish the dose and duration that guarantee safe use.

We cannot say it enough: galactagogues are not essential for breastfeeding. Good support from a professional trained in breastfeeding is, however, essential.

You can take complementary products while breastfeeding, particularly for their various enrichments, to help you stock up on nutrients according to your needs: DHA, iron, magnesium, vitamin D, etc. A post-partum food supplement multivitamin will help you stock up on these nutrients, which are essential for: energy, the brain, skin, hair, immunity, etc.

If you are taking other supplements, make sure you are not exceeding the recommended doses.

If you are taking galactagogues, be careful not to take too much, and speak to your healthcare professional before use. Every mother is different and does not need the same doses.

No, that's a myth! Drinking more than necessary will have no boosting effect on breast milk production, and restricting fluids during a weaning period will not reduce milk supply. Scientific data consistently show that neither increasing nor restricting fluid intake affects the volume of breast milk produced. You also do not need to give water to an exclusively breastfed baby.

Several plants are recognised for their effect on reducing milk production. These are peppermint, sage, parsley and agnus castus. These plants should not be taken if you are continuing to breastfeed your child — they are not compatible.

Yes, they are all free from cow's milk protein (CMP).

Breastfeeding boost snacks

Stocking up on nutrients whilst treating yourself — impossible? Not at all. You don't have to take flavourless food supplements or swallow unappetising plants. Jolly Mama has created healthy and delicious snacks for you, to provide all the nutrients needed for your baby's healthy development and help you avoid deficiencies! Natural snacks for every craving and every taste! Banana choc with banana and chocolate chips, Cho-chocolat all-chocolate, Mama moonies (Milk moonies) with matcha and moringa.

We also have other indulgent formats for all mothers: granola, cookie mix, and herbal tea.

And for those who would like it, a moringa capsule breastfeeding is also available as a lactation boost.

Good nutrients to take care of yourself and your milk supply

It's time to put nutrition back at the heart of your concerns. Breast milk will always contain the nutrients your baby needs. If your nutrient intake isn't sufficient, your body will draw on its reserves to ensure your baby gets everything they need. This can lead to deficiencies that cause fatigue, the well-known mommy brain, sleep disturbances, and more. We have developed products containing the essential nutrients during breastfeeding, such as DHA, which not only contributes to the healthy development of the brain and vision of the breastfed baby, but is also beneficial for your brain! Magnesium and vitamin D to replenish your energy levels and support good sleep, iron to combat fatigue, and always nourishing ingredients to provide the extra calories you need.
