FAQ on post-partum dietary supplements

Postpartum symptoms are numerous and varied, and differ from woman to woman.

During pregnancy, there is a gradual increase in hormones, with progesterone levels nine times higher and oestrogen levels eight times higher than usual. Once the placenta is delivered at birth, progesterone and oestrogen levels drop and return to normal within 2 to 4 days.

These hormonal changes can have some consequences and lead to transient and normal symptoms, such as night sweats, the onset of body odour, or bloodshot or swollen eyes.

One of the most striking is the onset of night sweats. More than 10% of women will experience night sweats during the first month of the postpartum period. The body is in fact eliminating the excess fluid retained during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Please note that if you have a fever and chills, or if you experience other unexplained symptoms such as weight loss, this could be a sign of another underlying condition (thyroid issue, infection, anxiety, etc.). Do also consult your doctor or midwife if the sweats persist beyond two weeks after delivery.

Giving birth is an ordeal, both physically and emotionally. Your body needs to recover physically from pregnancy and from the experience of childbirth. It needs to regain its strength and take in the nutrients that support its tissues, bones, and help rebuild its reserves.

Nutrition in the postpartum period is therefore essential to support your body, repair your tissues, and rebuild your reserves.

When giving birth, a woman loses a significant amount of blood, which generally leads to iron deficiency. Have a blood test before taking a iron supplement. Magnesium levels are also at their lowest, which risks exhausting the new mother and can cause more serious issues. If she is breastfeeding, she will also need to pay attention to her omega-3 intake, particularly DHA, which the breastfed baby needs for the healthy development of their brain and vision. The first thing not to overlook is hydration! Make sure to drink water and herbal teas freely. Also eat a portion of vegetables at lunch and dinner, fruit every day, complex carbohydrates at every meal and 150 g of protein per day. Plant proteins, oils, green vegetables and nuts should also feature every week! In the postpartum period, chicken broth is one of those time-honoured remedies for effective recovery.

Taking a postpartum food supplement helps limit extreme fatigue, anxiety and even the baby blues. After the arrival of a child, it can sometimes be difficult to maintain a varied and balanced diet to prevent deficiencies. A course of vitamins is an easy way to stay well and recover. The duration of a course of food supplements depends on the type of product you choose. For visible health benefits, we recommend taking your post-partum supplements every day for at least 6 weeks.

This is a normal phenomenon. Most women experience telogen effluvium or alopecia (diffuse and acute hair loss) during the postpartum period.

During pregnancy, the telogen phase (the shedding phase) is delayed and the number of hairs that fall is reduced, resulting in thicker, fuller hair. During the first weeks of the postpartum period, hairs enter the telogen phase. At nine weeks, approximately 30% of them are in the telogen phase (nearly twice as many as usual). This explains the clinical observation that postpartum hair loss appears two to four months after birth and rarely persists beyond that.

A thyroid problem could also be associated with excessive hair loss.

Stress is also a significant contributing factor in hair loss, which is why it tends to occur mainly after a first birth, when emotional stress is greater, and only rarely after subsequent pregnancies.

Although this hair loss is normal, it can be limited with a balanced diet and an appropriate hair loss supplement suited to your needs. From the moment the placenta is delivered at birth, hormones drop considerably (during pregnancy, levels of progesterone are 9 times higher and oestrogen 8 times higher), returning to normal in just 2 to 4 days! You can, however, try to give yourself every chance from pregnancy onwards to reduce the risk of postnatal depression. Postnatal depletion occurs when a mother's body has depleted its own nutrients in order to support her baby's growth during pregnancy and afterwards through breastfeeding. This state can increase the risk of depression, so it is essential to ensure all nutritional needs are met during pregnancy, for both yourself and your baby. For example, an imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 in early pregnancy increases the risk of postpartum depression in the year following birth.
