Relieving pain during the second stage of labour

Warm compresses applied during the second stage of labour to the perineal area increase the likelihood of an intact perineum and reduce the risk of episiotomy and serious perineal trauma.

Relieving pain after childbirth

Cold gel pads are effective for relieving pain, reducing inflammation, promoting healing, and soothing in cases of haemorrhoids. They are in particular more effective than ice packs.

A 20-minute application to the perineal area can help reduce the intensity of pain when sitting, walking, or breastfeeding. One study even showed a 2.5-fold reduction in pain !

Naturally reducing pain also allows mothers to rely less on analgesics for relief.

Heat soothes cramps. Gently applying a warm towel to the abdomen helps relax the muscles and ease cramps.

Relieving everyday discomforts

The towel, applied hot or cold, can also help relieve all types of pain: back pain, neck pain, headaches, and so on. Used cold, it can also help in cases of hot flushes (night sweats are common in the postpartum period).

Cool or heat the towel as instructed and place it on the area to be relieved in its cover. Do not use the towel for more than 20 minutes in one session. 

 

Cold: Place the towel in the refrigerator or freezer without its cover for at least 4 hours, then apply it to the area with its cover. 

 

Hot

In the microwave: 25 seconds in the microwave at 700W (or 19s at 1000W / 16s at 1250W).

Once heated, check the temperature of the towel, and if necessary, heat it for an additional 5 seconds until the desired temperature is reached. Always check the temperature before use and place the towel in its protective cover before applying. Do not overheat the towel.  

Gently massage the towel to distribute the heat evenly. 

 

In a bain-marie: In a saucepan, bring enough water to the boil and remove from the heat or hob. Immerse the towel in the water for 1 to 2 minutes. The water must no longer be boiling. The towel must be fully submerged and must not come into contact with the sides of the saucepan. Do not leave the saucepan unattended. 

Once heated, check the temperature of the towel and if necessary, return it to the bain-marie for 1 minute until the desired temperature is reached. Always check the temperature before use and place the towel in its protective cover before applying it to the area. Do not overheat the towel.

 

Warning

Always check the temperature of the towel before application. Prolonged use may cause injury, including burns. Not suitable for babies or toddlers. Do not use in the case of poor blood circulation. Do not use heat therapy on stitches or an open wound. In the event of extreme, prolonged or chronic pain, contact a healthcare professional. 

 

Heating for longer than recommended may damage the towel. Do not damage the towel or ingest its contents. For external use only. 

 

Cleaning: 

Clean the towel and cover with a mild soap and water.

Leave to air dry before next use.

Indeed, applying cold for too long can cause side effects (a stabbing sensation, numbness, loss of sensation). We recommend not using it for more than 20 minutes and taking regular breaks. 

Of course. Its elongated shape makes it very practical to use on the perineal area, but it can also be used on the whole body to relieve discomfort. 

Yes, absolutely! Heat or cold can help relieve everyday discomforts. Applying cold to the perineal area can be particularly effective for soothing haemorrhoids and constipation. 

We recommend cleaning it with water and soap, and not putting it in a washing machine. 

It is perfectly possible to use the pad without its cover, but take extra care with the temperature when applying it directly to the skin.
