Milk Blues, or post-weaning depression

It is often said that weaning is hard for the baby (refusing the bottle, tears…) — but what about the mother? What symptoms might she experience?

What is milk blues? It is common to hear that weaning is difficult for the baby (refusing the bottle, crying…) but what about the mother? Why is this subject never talked about? What are the symptoms that mothers can experience?

We have looked into wean your baby, and what this may involve.

Take care mama

Like baby blues, milk blues can be caused by a drop in hormones, which is perfectly normal.

What is milk blues or post-weaning depression?

This topic is rarely discussed. Yet many women speak of a period filled with fatigue, sadness, guilt, or even describe a genuine sense of grief. The words used are very raw. In some cases, women face a real post-weaning depression that requires support. But why is this subject almost never talked about? We all know the baby blues, and what about the MILK BLUES — why does nobody talk about it?

This topic seems like a taboo. Women themselves dare not talk about it. Why? For fear of being judged, of being told it is selfish behaviour…

What explains post-weaning depression?

Post-weaning depression is very rarely, if at all, described in the scientific literature. There are a few medical explanations that help to understand this state.

A few tips

Ask for help
And above all, take care of yourself!

Weaning causes a drop in hormones, particularly oxytocin — the "happiness hormone" that helps manage anxiety.

Moreover, weaning is often associated with the return of periods. This causes heavy bleeding and can lead to anaemia and fatigue. It is important to pay attention to your diet and lifestyle during this phase.

As long as she is breastfeeding, the mother has at her baby's disposal the remedy for all their troubles (hunger, thirst, fear, pain…). Some mothers feel at a loss after breastfeeding ends and no longer know how to comfort their baby. This will require a little time, which is why it is particularly advisable to make weaning as gradual and gentle as possible. Some mothers also feel dispossessed, once weaning is complete, of the unique bond they had with their child and find it difficult to accept others caring for them.

In some cases, weaning may be forced (medical treatment, social pressure, return to work…) and not necessarily wanted or accepted by the mother. Women sometimes feel a sense of failure, of not having managed to complete their breastfeeding journey, or even of not being a good mother.

What advice is there to help limit milk blues?

It may seem obvious, but the more gradually weaning happens, the better it will be — for the baby, but also for the mother, both physically and emotionally.

We say it often, but it is also important to take care of yourself. Learn to listen to your body and ask for help when you feel you need it, whether from those close to you or from healthcare professionals.
Do not give in to social pressure or pressure from those around you if you wish to continue breastfeeding your baby. Seek support to make it possible. Remember that IBCLC lactation consultants can help and guide you!

It is also important to be mindful during intentional weaning or natural weaning, as some of these symptoms may still occur.

If needed, you can take a breastfeeding supplement like Post essentials, which contains an active ingredient for emotional wellbeing.
