German chamomile: your ally for comfort and cycle wellbeing

ingrédient camomille
An everyday soothing plant

Matricaria chamomile is recognised in herbal medicine for its relaxing benefits and its beneficial effect on nervous balance. In practice, it is the plant that comes to mind when your cycle is accompanied by tension, irritability or disrupted sleep in the week leading up to your period — a very common experience among women.

Cycle comfort and PMS relief

Thanks to its active compounds, including apigenin and flavonoids, chamomile contributes to reducing the physical discomforts associated with the menstrual cycle, such as mild cramps or sensations of abdominal tension, supporting women towards greater serenity at each phase.

Gentle and easy to use

A traditional medicinal plant with a long history of use, chamomile (matricaria) is very well tolerated and fits easily into a daily routine — as a liquid ampoule or an infusion — for gentle, natural support throughout the cycle.

Origin and description

German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla, also known by its Latin name Matricaria recutita or as German chamomile) is an annual plant of the Asteraceae family, native to Europe and Central Asia, widely cultivated in France and around the world for its white flowers with yellow centres and their well-documented therapeutic properties.

It contains flavonoids, notably apigenin, as well as essential oils including chamazulene — compounds recognised for their soothing, relaxing and anti-inflammatory actions. Its chamazulene also gives it its characteristic blue colour during distillation of its essential oil.

Its potential is particularly credible for women experiencing premenstrual syndrome, thanks to its action on nervous balance, sleep and muscular comfort. The quality of the extract, its standardisation in apigenin and the method of production directly influence the effectiveness and consistency of the benefits experienced.

In its natural form, German chamomile is very much part of everyday life: dried flower infusion is a traditional preparation consumed for centuries across Europe to unwind at the end of the day or relieve minor digestive complaints. The basic recipe is simple: pour boiling water over a tablespoon of dried flowers, leave to infuse for five to ten minutes, then strain and enjoy in a cup. It can also be combined with other medicinal plants in a blended herbal tea, or used to prepare a foot bath or a compress soaked in the infusion for a soothing external application on painful areas. Some herbalism recommendations also suggest adding a few drops of diluted essential oil in an abdominal massage for menstrual comfort. Other medicinal plants with similar uses include lemon balm, passionflower and lemon verbena. The absorption of its active compounds depends on the water temperature, the infusion time and the quality of the organic dried flowers, which rapidly lose their active constituents if poorly stored. Intake through food remains pleasant but difficult to standardise.

As a supplement, German chamomile can be found as: a dry extract standardised in apigenin, flower powder capsules, mother tincture, liquid ampoule or incorporated into botanical complexes dedicated to the cycle or relaxation. It is particularly suited to women experiencing a hormonal imbalance and wish to restore menstrual comfort through a gentle, progressive plant-based approach. As an infusion, it features notably in Jolly Mama's Sweet Mama herbal tea — a gentle, comforting way to enjoy its benefits every day. To ensure consistent action as a supplement, a standardised flavonoid extract is preferable to a simple plant powder, whose content can vary from one batch to another. German chamomile is naturally vegan. People with allergies to Asteraceae — such as those sensitive to ragweed or chrysanthemum — should exercise caution before use.

Why is German chamomile your cycle's ally?

  • Easing cycle-related tension

Contributes to reducing feelings of physical tension and mild cramps, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects on smooth muscles, which sometimes accompany periods or the week leading up to them.

  • Nervous balance and serenity

Supports nervous system balance and contributes to a sense of calm, particularly useful during phases of the cycle marked by irritability or stress, thanks in particular to its soothing chamazulene.

  • Sleep quality

Promotes more restful sleep and restful sleep — two benefits that are greatly appreciated when insomnia sets in during the premenstrual period — and helps reduce accumulated fatigue.

  • Digestive comfort around the cycle

Helps to soothe minor digestive discomforts, such as bloating or intestinal spasms, which often accompany periods in many women.

  • Mood and hair support

Its flavonoids, particularly apigenin, contribute to better emotional balance throughout the cycle. Its anti-inflammatory properties are also used topically for hair and scalp care.

How does it work? (The science bit)

German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) owes its effects to a set of naturally occurring compounds that work in a particularly well-coordinated way. The principal one, apigenin, is a flavonoid that binds to certain brain receptors involved in the management of stress and anxiety, producing a calming effect without causing excessive drowsiness. Chamazulene, derived from the flower's essential oils, contributes to an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory action on smooth muscle, which may explain the abdominal comfort experienced during menstrual pain. Once ingested — whether as an infusion or an extract — the plant is absorbed at the digestive level and its active compounds circulate throughout the body, gradually acting on the nervous system and muscle tissue.

In the context of the menstrual cycle, these combined effects make German chamomile — also known as Roman chamomile in its closely related varieties — a plant particularly well suited to supporting the most uncomfortable phases. The premenstrual period, when physical tension, mood swings and sleep disturbances are most keenly felt, is precisely the point in the cycle where its action proves most useful. Phytotherapy literature and European monographs confirm its benefits for mild anxiety and digestive discomfort.

Your questions, our answers.

It is one of its best-established medicinal uses. Its active compounds, including chamazulene and flavonoids, contribute to relaxing smooth muscles and soothing the abdominal tension that accompanies periods. The effect is gradual and builds over several cycles of regular use. It can in particular be taken in menopause food supplement to support the cycle during perimenopause.

A cup of dried flower infusion in the evening can already provide a first gentle comfort.

Heat water to around 90°C, pour it over a tablespoon of dried flowers in a cup, leave to steep for five to ten minutes depending on the desired strength, then strain. For external use, a compress soaked in cooled infusion can be applied to the abdomen for a soothing local effect during cramps.

At Jolly Mama, we recommend the organic chamomile and apple herbal tea: Sweet Mama !

It is generally very well tolerated. The rare adverse effects reported mainly concern people who are allergic to plants of the Asteraceae family, such as ragweed or chrysanthemum, in whom a skin or digestive reaction may occur. Outside of this case, chamomile is considered a gentle and well-tolerated plant.

At the doses typically found in supplements and infusions, feverfew chamomile is generally well tolerated, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, particularly anticoagulants or sedatives, consult a healthcare professional before starting a course. People with allergies to Asteraceae should also exercise caution.

Very well. It naturally pairs with other female cycle plants such as chasteberry or St John's wort for comprehensive support of menstrual comfort and hormonal balance. As an infusion, it also combines with apple and other soothing plants, as in Jolly Mama's Sweet Mama herbal tea, for a gentle and comforting evening ritual.
