Zinc: a quiet ally for your skin, hair, and immunity

The zinc is a trace element that the body cannot store in large quantities, which is why a regular intake matters so much. Among the zinc benefits recognised at European level, zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and hair, to the normal functioning of the immune system, to the normal metabolism of macronutrients, and to the protection of cells against oxidative stress. At Jolly Mama, our zinc food supplements use the bisglycinate form, a zinc bound to an amino acid, chosen for its good digestive tolerance and absorption.

Our dedicated product, Zinc Mama, provides 10 mg of zinc bisglycinate per capsule, covering 100% of reference intakes in a single daily dose. Zinc also features in several of our complete formulas: Bump Essentials (6.5 mg per 2 capsules), designed for conception and pregnancy, Cocooning+ (5 mg per ampoule) for the baby-planning phase, and Post Essentials (10 mg per 2 capsules) for the post-partum period. All our zinc forms are bisglycinate, and our supplements are manufactured in France.

Depending on the stage of life, zinc supports different needs: comfort for the skin and hair, support for the immune system, vitality when fatigue sets in. During pregnancy and the post-partum period, micronutrient needs evolve, and an appropriate intake can help address potential deficiencies.

Zinc in brief: a trace element that cannot be stored and must be supplied regularly. Bisglycinate is a well-tolerated and well-absorbed form. Zinc Mama covers 100% of reference intakes in one capsule. EFSA claims relate to skin, hair, nails, and immunity.

Frequently asked questions about zinc

Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails — claims validated by the EFSA. In practice, it is involved in skin cell renewal and hair structure. A regular intake can therefore support skin comfort and hair vitality throughout the seasons.

Yes, zinc contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system — this is a recognised health claim. It is involved in the development and activity of immune cells. Maintaining adequate zinc levels thus helps support natural defences, particularly during more demanding periods.

Bisglycinate is a form of zinc bound to glycine, an amino acid. This chelated form is valued for its good digestive tolerance and absorption. It is the form used in Zinc Mama and in our maternity formulas, as it is gentle on the stomach and practical for daily use.

Zinc Mama provides 10 mg of zinc bisglycinate per capsule, equivalent to 100% of the nutrient reference value, in a single daily dose. This amount corresponds to a maintenance intake suitable for most women. It is best not to combine several sources of zinc without appropriate guidance.

Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, as well as to normal DNA synthesis. Several of our formulas contain it, such as Baby Bump for conception and pregnancy, or Post Essentials for the post-partum period. To adapt your intake to your situation, seek advice from your midwife or doctor.

Zinc is generally taken with a meal to limit digestive discomfort. With Zinc Mama, one capsule per day is sufficient. Certain nutrients such as iron or calcium can interfere with its absorption: it may be helpful to space out doses throughout the day.

Zinc contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative stress, a recognised EFSA claim. It acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in this protection. This intake contributes to the overall balance of the body, without replacing a varied and good-quality diet.

A zinc deficiency can occur, particularly with a diet low in zinc sources. Possible signs of deficiency are non-specific, such as weakened skin or low vitality. A supplement such as Zinc Mama can help support intake when diet alone is not sufficient to cover requirements.

Benefits of our products for Zinc: a quiet ally for your skin, hair, and immunity

Zinc: a trace element worth knowing about

Zinc in your diet

Zinc is found in many everyday foods, with varying bioavailability depending on their origin. Animal sources provide zinc that is relatively well absorbed, while plant sources contain compounds that can limit its assimilation. A varied diet helps to cover requirements, but certain life stages or dietary patterns can make it harder to reach adequate intake.

Good to know: plant-based zinc is often less well absorbed than animal-based zinc, due to the presence of phytates. Varying your sources and choosing a well-absorbed form such as bisglycinate can help support your intake.

Zinc as a supplement: the bisglycinate form

Zinc supplements come in several forms: gluconate, citrate, oxide, and bisglycinate. The latter, known as chelated zinc, binds zinc to an amino acid and stands out for its bioavailability, digestive gentleness and absorption. That is why we chose it for Zinc Mama and our maternity formulas. You can support your intake with just one capsule a day, easy to incorporate into your routine, alongside a balanced diet.

Zinc throughout the journey of motherhood

Micronutrient needs change throughout the different stages of life. Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, which is why it features in our formulas from the baby planning phase through to the postpartum period. After giving birth, as the body recovers, maintaining normal skin and hair becomes especially meaningful. Depending on your stage, you can opt for a comprehensive formula or a targeted zinc supplement on its own. It is also compatible with our keratin supplement for hair.

Did you know: unlike some other minerals, the body does not have a true zinc reserve. A regular intake, through diet and a supplement when needed, therefore helps maintain good zinc status on a daily basis.

Precautions

A food supplement does not replace a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Follow the recommended daily dose and keep products out of reach of children. Prolonged intake of zinc at high doses may interfere with the absorption of other minerals such as copper: it is advisable not to combine multiple sources without professional guidance.
