Keratin-based food supplement: supporting your hair after giving birth

Keratin is the main protein that makes up hair and nail fibres. The body produces it from amino acids such as cystine, but its production can be put to the test after a pregnancy, when hair enters the shedding phase. A keratin food supplement provides this protein in an already hydrolysed form, which is easier for cells to absorb, to support your intake of amino acids and structural protein during a targeted hair care regimen, week after week.

In this collection, you will find our formulas designed for maternity. Mama hair is taken in liquid form with a pipette and provides 500 mg of Cynatine® HNS keratin, 400 mg of apple extract and 25 micrograms of biotin per daily dose. Hair essentials offers the same Cynatine® HNS keratin in capsules, for those who prefer this format. Both are designed to be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding, after giving birth. The hair gift set combines Mama hair with a scalp massage brush.

Post-partum hair loss, also known as telogen effluvium, affects many new mothers in the months following birth. It is most often temporary. An iron deficiency can also worsen this hair loss, which is why a blood test is useful. To find out more, browse our hair collection and our post-partum range, and remember to check your iron intake, and if needed take a food supplement containing iron.

Key takeaway: biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair according to the health claims authorised by the EFSA. Cynatine® HNS keratin provides the structural protein of the hair, while post-partum hair loss most often remains temporary. A regular hair care regimen lasting several months makes more sense than a one-off course.

FAQ - Keratin and hair during maternity

Keratin is the protein that forms the structure of the hair fibre, nails and skin. It is composed of amino acids, including cysteine and cystine. In a food supplement, it is often hydrolysed — that is, broken down into smaller fragments to facilitate absorption by the cells. The Cynatine® HNS keratin in our products is a soluble, patented form, rich in sulphur-containing amino acids, designed for the beauty and vitality of hair.

Postpartum hair loss, or telogen effluvium, is linked to hormonal changes and the stress of this period, and is most often temporary. Keratin provides the structural protein of the hair and biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. This hair supplement can support your intake during this shedding phase, without acting as a treatment. A targeted vitamin or mineral such as zinc often complements this type of product.

Our Mama Hair and Hair Essentials formulas are designed to be compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding. Before starting a course during this period, seek advice from your midwife or doctor, especially if you are currently undergoing treatment. This check allows you to take your supplement with complete peace of mind.

The choice depends mainly on your preference. Hair Essentials comes in capsules, which are practical to carry and can be opened to mix their contents into yoghurt or water. Mama Hair is taken in liquid form via a pipette, diluted in a glass of water. Both products provide the same Cynatine® HNS keratin for hair and the same dose of biotin, a B-group vitamin. The liquid formula additionally contains an apple extract for hair.

Hair grows slowly, approximately one centimetre per month, so a keratin course should be thought of as a long-term commitment to support hair growth. A period of three months is generally recommended to allow time for the routine to become established. The first results with the Cynatine® HNS formula are noted from the first month, but consistency of intake remains the key factor for supported hair and nails.

Keratin is generally well tolerated. Our formulas also contain biotin at 25 micrograms, which is 50 per cent of the reference value — a measured dose. Please note: biotin supplementation can interfere with certain laboratory blood tests. If you are due to have a blood panel, inform the medical staff of your supplement course.

Cynatine® HNS keratin is derived from sheep's wool, so it is not an ingredient of plant origin. Hair essentials is suitable for a vegetarian diet but is not vegan. If you follow a strictly plant-based diet, this is worth checking before choosing your hair supplement.

For hair health, several vitamins and minerals work in synergy. A zinc food supplement, selenium and biotin have recognised health claims for the maintenance of normal hair. An iron deficiency can also worsen postpartum hair loss. A keratin supplement primarily supports structural protein intake, as part of a balanced diet that contributes to the normal metabolism of cells.

Benefits of our products for Keratin-based food supplement: supporting your hair after giving birth

Understanding keratin and its benefits for hair

Why hair falls out after giving birth

During pregnancy, hair often benefits from a prolonged growth phase and appears thicker and fuller. After giving birth, this cycle rebalances and some hairs simultaneously enter a shedding phase: this is postpartum telogen effluvium. This hair loss is temporary and affects many new mothers, often in a context of fatigue and stress. During this period, the scalp's needs are heightened, and an iron deficiency can worsen the loss. A hair supplement keratin and biotin-based product can support your hair nutrient intake, as a complement to a varied diet and, if needed, a health check. Keratin provides the protein, biotin is the vitamin that contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, and the product fits into a regular routine. To assess any potential deficiencies, a blood test remains the reference.

Keratin, biotin and other hair actives

Keratin provides the protein that structures the hair fibre and nail. It works alongside other vitamins and minerals whose roles in hair health are recognised by European health claims. To help limit hair loss and support normal hair, biotin, zinc and selenium are the most frequently cited actives. Some beauty routines also incorporate plants such as horsetail, traditionally associated with hair and skin, but which is not compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding. The table below brings together the main hair-targeted actives and their EFSA-authorised claims, for results appreciated over the course of weeks.

iotin, zinc and selenium contribute to the maintenance of normal hair: these are health claims validated by the EFSA. Keratin has no specific claim of its own, but remains the structural protein of hair and nails. A hair formula often combines keratin with these vitamins and minerals. Biotin is kept at a measured level in our products.

Did you know: the Cynatine® HNS keratin in our formulas is a solubilised, patented keratin derived from sheep's wool. This hydrolysed form is designed to be more readily absorbed than raw keratin, to support normal hair throughout the course of treatment.

Choosing the right keratin supplement

To compare two hair food supplements, a few reference points help to see things clearly: the form of keratin and its dose, the presence of recognised actives such as biotin, zinc or selenium, and compatibility with pregnancy and breastfeeding. Format also matters for consistency of care: the capsules of Hair essentials fit easily into your routine, whilst the liquid pipette of Mama hair suits those who prefer not to swallow capsules. In both cases, the course is designed to last several months, giving hair time to renew itself and gain in strength. If fatigue accompanies this period, our fatigue and lack of energy can complement your beauty routine.

Mama tip: massage your scalp for a few minutes before shampooing to stimulate local circulation. The hair set also pairs Mama hair with a silicone massage brush designed for this very purpose.

If you are undergoing treatment, have a medical history or existing condition, pay close attention to possible interactions and usage precautions. Biotin supplementation may interfere with certain blood test results: always mention any course of supplements before a laboratory test.
