What if we took back control of our bodies and our cycle? In France, the pill remains the most widely used form of contraception, largely because it is considered the most reliable.

That said, the pill is far from harmless for our bodies and is increasingly controversial.

Natural methods are rarely presented by specialists in France, often considered too unreliable or too complicated.

Yet the symptothermal method has many advantages, including a success rate very close to that of the pill!

Did you know?

It is a non-invasive, low-cost and reliable method. You will need to go through a learning phase of at least 6 cycles before you can fully master the method.

What is symptothermal method?

Sympto-thermal method is a fertility awareness method based on tracking several signs and ovulation symptom (unlike other natural methods, which track only one).

Temperature changes throughout the cycle and rises after ovulation.
It should be taken first thing in the morning, and regular monitoring is needed to understand how it evolves. In theory, temperature is low during the first part of the cycle, then rises in the second part (after ovulation) under the effect of progesterone. In practice, it can sometimes be less straightforward, and it is best to seek guidance to learn how to correctly interpret your chart!

These are the white or yellow secretions found in your underwear. Produced by the cervix and secreted under the influence of oestrogens, it helps to facilitate the meeting of the egg and sperm. It has different appearances throughout the cycle (creamy, pasty, viscous, slippery, transparent) and a sudden change is noticed after ovulation (drop in oestrogens). It generally becomes whiter and more compact after ovulation, but sometimes disappears altogether. It is important to learn to recognise "your own mucus" and how it changes throughout the cycle.

A few indicators to help understand the fertile phase: the more mucus there is, the more fertile you are / the more fluid it is, the more fertile you are.

Monitoring the position of the cervix can also be added. Its position, opening and firmness can be observed, as these parameters change throughout the cycle. Tip: a firm, dry, well-closed cervix indicates that you are in an infertile phase!

With this method, the fertile window lasts approximately 10 days. It is calculated by taking into account the lifespan of sperm in the cervical mucus and the lifespan of the egg in the fallopian tube, plus a safety margin before and after.

Furthermore, beyond the fact that this method is completely non-invasive for our bodies or for the planet (non-polluting, no waste), it also has the advantage of being very low cost: the only equipment needed is a good thermometer and something to record the parameters on.

How do you learn symptothermal method?

You need to go through a learning phase of at least 6 cycles before you can fully take ownership of the method. Both temperature and cervical mucus must be tracked, as external events can disrupt one or the other of these signs.

In the early stages, try to be supported by a healthcare professional specialised in sympto-thermal method, or a sympto-thermal method instructor. Some apps (such as Moonly) can support you, but we recommend using them only once you have fully mastered the method (or as a complement to learning).

The aim is to clearly recognise all the signals that indicate when you are in your fertile phase. Outside of this phase, there is little to no risk of becoming pregnant!

EFFECTIVE

When learned and applied correctly, the symptothermal method has a Pearl Index of 0.4 (the percentage of women using the method who become pregnant within a year). By comparison, the Pearl Index of the pill is 0.3!

Who is symptothermal method for and what is it used for?

Symptothermal method is a way of managing your cycle that can suit anyone who wants to take back control of their cycle, particularly after coming off the pill.

You can use symptothermal method at any point in your life as a woman, including during breastfeeding and perimenopause, and also if you have irregular cycles.

In particular, you can use this method:

Symptothermal method helps define the fertile window. During this period, vaginal penetration should be avoided, or barrier methods (such as condoms) used. The method must be applied with great care to minimise the risk of unwanted pregnancy and to reliably achieve a negative pregnancy test. The partner must be committed to the method and willing to act differently during the fertile phase.

The identified fertile window will allow the couple to maximise the chances of achieving a positive pregnancy test. We tell you more in our article on how to calculate your ovulation

Sympto-thermal charting also simply allows you to reconnect with your cycle. We know that the cycle reveals a great deal about our hormonal balance and overall health. Learning to detect abnormalities can enable us to address health concerns proactively.

Knowing how to use the sympto-thermal method allows you to anticipate the arrival of your period (particularly in the case of irregular cycles) and to detect the first signs of perimenopause. This can help you act quickly and turn to menopause food supplements to support your body. Discover our selection of menopause vitamins to support you.

The sympto-thermal method as a form of contraception: how effective is it?

This method shows very low unplanned pregnancy rates, close to those of hormonal contraceptive devices. This has been supported by a German study[1] spanning more than 20 years!

When learned and applied correctly, symptothermal method has a Pearl Index of 0.4 [2] (the percentage of women using the method who become pregnant within a year). By comparison, the Pearl Index for the pill is 0.3.

This index is calculated for couples who were recruited and monitored for a minimum of 3 cycles.
