DHA: the brain's best ally and anti-baby blues support

actif dha 22f1fbce 1a1a 48c6 b16f 39559fb60efd
Omega-3, key to the brain

A major component of neuron and retinal membranes, it supports the normal development of the baby's brain and vision during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Pregnancy & mood ally

An adequate DHA intake is associated with more positive pregnancy outcomes (less prematurity, better neurocognitive development) and may help reduce the risk of baby blues or postnatal depression.

Compatible with breastfeeding

Passes into breast milk, helping to continue nourishing the baby's brain and vision throughout the duration of breastfeeding.

Origin and description

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid essential that forms part of the membranes of all cells, particularly those of the brain and the retina.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, it contributes to the normal development of the baby's brain and vision, while supporting the mother's cognitive functions and emotional balance.

In natural form, DHA is mainly found in oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, anchovies, cod liver), marine algae and animal products enriched with DHA such as eggs, certain meats or milks. The advantage: an overall nutritional contribution and good absorption by the body, provided the dosage is carefully managed.

As a food supplement, it is found in DHA supplements, with a vegan option, which provide the active form of omega-3 needed by the brain and retina directly. It can also be found in a pregnancy vitamins but it must be kept separate from the other active ingredients. The dosage is controlled and reproducible from one day to the next, which makes it easier to meet the recommendations during pregnancy and breastfeeding, including for mothers and mothers-to-be who eat little or no fish. It can also be taken as a menopause supplement to support the brain and cardiovascular health.

Why is DHA your maternity ally?

  • Brain development

Contributes to the structuring of neuronal membranes and healthy cognitive development of the foetus and infant.

  • Vision development

Contributes to retinal maturation and normal vision development.

  • Prevention of complications

Adequate intakes associated with a reduced risk of premature birth and better birth weight.

  • Fertility and implantation

Involved in the quality of oocyte membranes and the early stages of placentation.

  • Emotional support

An optimal DHA status is associated with better mood balance in the postpartum period.

How does it work? (The science bit)

DHA is a superb ally for your baby's brain and eyes. Think of it as a tiny drop of oil that gently "lubricates" the circuits of your baby's nervous system, so that everything works perfectly and the connections between neurons are smooth and efficient.

During pregnancy, DHA reaches your bloodstream through your diet or your supplements, then crosses the placenta to go directly where your baby needs it most: its brain and eyes. It is especially during the last trimester, when your baby's brain is growing at full speed, that the need for DHA is at its highest.

And after the birth? DHA continues its action through breast milk, still supporting the maturation of the nervous system, vision and learning. If you do not wish to or cannot breastfeed, don't worry: there are also infant milks enriched with DHA, to replicate this natural boost.

Experts recommend a minimum daily intake of 250 mg of DHA during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Whether you prefer oily fish or a specialist maternity supplement, the important thing above all is to ensure your DHA intake, by choosing the option that suits you best!

Your questions, our answers.

DHA is a real boost for the development of your baby's brain and eyes — a bit like a super fuel for their neural connections! It also helps reduce the risk of premature birth and supports a healthy birth weight.

Prenatal DHA is a "ready-to-use" omega-3 that passes directly from mother to foetus, supporting its neurological and visual development. It also has an anti-inflammatory action during pregnancy.

A good intake of DHA may help improve the quality of your eggs, support cell membrane fluidity and facilitate the early stages of placentation. The result? Supported fertility and a smoother implantation process!

Experts generally recommend at least 100 to 200 mg of additional DHA per day for expectant and new mothers, with many aiming for 200 to 300 mg for optimal effect. An easy goal to reach by adjusting your diet or choosing the right supplements!

It is also possible to take it in addition to our menopause vitamins, to support your brain during perimenopause.

At the recommended doses, DHA is generally well tolerated. At higher doses, some people may report mild digestive discomfort (nausea, reflux, loose stools). In cases of very high intake, caution is strongly advised for people on anticoagulant treatment.

If you have a known allergy to any component of the supplement (fish, shellfish, or algae depending on the source), or a chronic condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional (doctor, midwife…) before taking any supplement. If you are supplementing at a high dose (more than 300 mg per day), consult a healthcare professional if you are on anticoagulant treatment or have a clotting disorder.
