FAQ on women's vitamins

Each person has specific needs. These vary depending on age, diet, personal situation (pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause), and so on.

There are many factors to consider when determining whether you need to take supplements and which vitamin(s) to choose. In particular, if you are vegetarian or vegan, vitamin B12 is essential. If you are trying for a baby or are pregnant, vitamin B9 (or folic acid) is essential. More generally, a multivitamin supplement is recommended to help cover all your needs. If you are taking a contraceptive pill, a course of B vitamins may help to address the deficiencies this can cause.

It may be worth taking vitamin D during the winter months when sun exposure is limited. This can be particularly beneficial for immunity, which tends to be weaker during this period.

If you are feeling tired or experiencing low energy, a course of magnesium is worth considering.

You can also have a blood test to find out your actual needs. This will allow you to take a women's food supplement accordingly.

A course can be started whenever you feel the need. For example, with a change of seasons, when you are feeling very stressed, when your diet is not optimal, when your sleep is disrupted, and so on. All of these factors can affect your nutritional status.
If you are trying for a baby, it is recommended to start your course from the very beginning of your journey. During pregnancy, taking a multivitamin is strongly recommended throughout. Breastfeeding mothers should also ensure they have optimal intake for both themselves and their baby. During perimenopause, it can also be beneficial to take a menopause supplement to ensure your needs are met.

A course of supplements will help to address nutritional deficiencies, which generate several symptoms. Taking supplements can therefore help to:
Have more energy
Feel less stressed
Sleep better
Have healthier hair (less breakage, less dryness, less hair loss, etc.). Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair.
Healthier skin (less dryness, less tightness, etc.). Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin.
Better immunity
Improved focus
Etc.

All vitamins and minerals are essential. The best approach is to eat a varied and balanced diet to help cover your needs. However, it is not always easy to maintain optimal nutritional status. Indeed, numerous studies highlight deficiencies in women. For example, a study in France shows that the prevalence of deficiencies is particularly high for:
Calcium, with more than 60% of men and women having insufficient calcium intake.
Magnesium, the deficiency of which affects both men and women, with insufficient magnesium intake in 70% and 80% of cases respectively.
There is also iron. This is a very widespread deficiency in women. Indeed, more than 70% of women of childbearing age have inadequate intakes.
Vitamin C, with more than 66% of women aged 15 to 54 not consuming enough.
Other studies also show that this is the case for:
Vitamin D, where more than 70% of adults in France have insufficient intakes, and more than 75% of pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Vitamin B9 (or folic acid), particularly during pregnancy, where more than 75% of pregnant women have insufficient intakes.
Iodine, with 43% of women of childbearing age having insufficient iodine intake.
Zinc, for which age, sex, and geographical area appear to be the main determinants of serum zinc concentrations in France.

The choline supplements are particularly important during the maternity period, for example.

Iron is one of the minerals for which taking a supplement without medical guidance is not recommended. Both insufficient intake and excess can be harmful. We recommend consulting your doctor so that they can request a blood test to determine whether you need to supplement or not. A pregnant woman, or one who experiences heavy periods, or who consumes little red meat, may be in a situation where an iron-based product is recommended.

To choose quality food supplements wisely, it is essential to take several factors into account. First, check the quality of your product's ingredients — that is, the forms used: opt for methylated forms of vitamin B9 (avoid folic acid) and B12, bisglycinate forms for minerals, and avoid oxide forms. Good forms ensure proper absorption by the body and are beneficial to health, whereas poor forms are poorly absorbed and may also have negative effects on health. Where the formula allows, try to favour organic options as well.

Also pay close attention to product dosages by checking the percentages corresponding to daily intakes in the nutritional tables. Look carefully at the ingredient list of your product to avoid those packed with harmful additives (silicon dioxide, iron oxide, etc.). Particularly for pregnant women, it is even more important to pay attention to the composition of your pregnancy food supplement.

Do not hesitate to seek professional guidance for the best possible support.

Many everyday factors can influence our nutritional status and reduce nutrient absorption. These include in particular:

Nutrition, which is the primary key factor. An unbalanced, non-varied diet cannot ensure your needs are met. A diet that is heavily processed will only provide foods that are nutritionally empty.

Weight-loss diets, or those that focus on a particular type of food, do not allow for sufficient variety of food sources to ensure adequate nutritional intake. For example, diets that eliminate all fats will lead to a lack of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for overall health (cognitive function, hormones, etc.).

Stress leads to a rise in the hormone cortisol, which depletes reserves of vitamins and minerals, such as magnesium.

Engaging in intensive sport also affects nutritional requirements.

Taking the pill also has consequences and can lead to deficiencies, particularly in B-group vitamins.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are in periods of very high nutritional demand, with needs that are elevated and, for many nutrients, difficult to meet through diet alone. Taking a pregnancy vitamins and a breastfeeding food supplement may be essential.

Certain chronic conditions, such as diabetes, digestive disorders or autoimmune diseases, can reduce nutrient absorption.

Environmental factors, including pollution or exposure to toxins, can also affect nutritional status.

The choice of a women's vitamin supplement depends above all on the stage of life and daily routine. During pregnancy, folic acid (vitamin B9) is a priority, and more broadly the use of a multivitamin. After the age of 40, vitamin D and K2 for calcium metabolism and magnesium become even more essential. Active or sporty women will have greater need for B-group vitamins for energy and recovery, and for plant protein powder. The ideal is to select a formula suited to one's age, diet and lifestyle habits.

Effects vary depending on individual needs and consistency of use. In general, women's vitamins can help reduce fatigue, support the immune system, improve concentration and contribute to hormonal balance. Some women also notice improvements in skin, hair and nail quality. Results appear gradually, often after a few weeks of regular use, provided the supplements are combined with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle overall.

Jolly Mama women's vitamins

Our products help you stock up on nutrients at every stage of life. Our supplements, snacks and granolas are not specifically designed for pregnancy and breastfeeding — they are perfectly suited to anyone who needs a nutritional boost.

For example: our pregnancy omega-3, our pregnancy choline, our pregnancy vitamin D, our iron supplement for pregnant women or our anti-fatigue food supplement with magnesium bisglycinate are all tailored to women's needs, whether during the conception period, pregnancy, post-partum, breastfeeding or outside of these periods.

Why women's vitamins are essential at every stage of life

Nutritional needs change over time: adolescence, pregnancy, motherhood, menopause… At each stage, the body requires a specific intake of vitamins and minerals to maintain energy, hormonal balance and vitality. Women's vitamins play a key role in supporting the immune system, preserving bone health and improving concentration. An appropriate intake can also help reduce fatigue and promote overall wellbeing.

Women's vitamins for pregnancy and the post-partum period

During pregnancy, nutrient needs increase significantly: folic acid (vitamin B9) to help prevent neural tube defects, vitamin D for the baby's bone development, iron to compensate for blood losses, and omega-3s to support foetal growth. After birth, post-partum women's vitamins help replenish energy reserves, support breastfeeding and prevent common deficiencies such as magnesium or iodine. Targeted supplementation can therefore be a genuine ally for new mothers.

Women's vitamins after 40 and during the menopause

From the age of 40, metabolism slows and hormonal fluctuations become more pronounced. Calcium, vitamin D and magnesium help preserve bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. B vitamins support the nervous system and contribute to stress management. Finally, antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E help protect against cellular ageing, supporting skin vitality and radiance. Omega-3 intake is beneficial for the brain.

How to choose the right women's vitamins

With so many supplements available, it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start. Choosing quality women's vitamins depends on several criteria: how well they match your needs, the product's composition, and above all the bioavailability of the ingredients and nutrients. Opting for natural formulas, free from unnecessary additives, allows you to make the most of their benefits.

Identifying your specific nutritional needs

Before starting a course of vitamins, it is essential to assess your lifestyle, diet and health. A pregnant woman will not have the same needs as someone going through the menopause or an active sportswoman. For example, a deficiency in magnesium or vitamin B12 can cause significant fatigue, while a lack of vitamin D often manifests as low energy, reduced immunity or bone fragility. Knowing your nutritional priorities helps you choose the right supplement.

Prioritising quality and bioavailability in supplements

The quality of a product depends on its composition and how well it is absorbed by the body. Natural women's vitamins, derived from plant or marine sources, generally offer better absorption than synthetic versions. Checking for minerals in highly bioavailable forms (citrate, bisglycinate…) ensures optimal efficacy. In addition, choosing transparent brands that are mindful of health and the environment, with organic certification where possible, allows you to supplement with confidence.
