FAQ on libido dietary supplements

Throughout the different phases of the menstrual cycle, your body produces different hormones at varying levels. This hormonal fluctuation is partly responsible for variations in libido. Although everyone is different, many people experience a higher libido during ovulation, or just at the end of the follicular phase, when oestrogen levels are at their highest. The increase in libido is often explained by the rise in oestrogen. As fertility is at its peak during ovulation, this increase could be an evolutionary response designed to increase the chances of reproduction. Oxytocin is also at its highest during this period. Oxytocin is often referred to as the love hormone and may contribute to sexual arousal, trust and attachment. In addition to these two hormones, your body also produces luteinising hormone (LH), which triggers ovulation. One of these hormones, or a combination of them, is likely responsible for this increase during ovulation.
After ovulation, progesterone is at its peak, and this is also when many people notice a significant drop in their desire. Beyond hormone levels, the symptoms that some people experience during the premenstrual phase can lead to a decrease in libido.

The main symptom of a decrease is a reduction in desire compared to your usual level of interest in sex.
The symptoms are as follows:
Absence of interest in, or reduced interest in, any type of sexual activity, including masturbation.
Reduction in sexual fantasies or sexual thoughts.
Feeling unhappy or distressed about having a low desire for sexual activity.

It is considered a "dysfunction" if it persists for at least six months and causes distress or tension in your relationship. It is the most common type of sexual dysfunction in women. It corresponds to a decrease in the frequency and/or intensity of desire that you previously experienced.

Several conditions and situations can be at the root of it, including:

Hormonal imbalance : hormones and their fluctuations are one of the major factors. A hormonal contraceptive, by blocking the natural fluctuation of hormones, can also dampen libido.

Relationship issues with your partner: these issues are among the most common causes.

Stress and exhaustion: they can reduce your libido by preventing you from thinking about desire, and may also disrupt hormonal balance.

Depression: symptoms of depression can reduce your libido.

Weight gain: it can lead to a drop in energy, a negative self-image and a loss of intimacy with your partner.

The side effects of certain medications: antidepressants, antipsychotics, chemotherapy drugs and blood pressure medications may all play a role.

Alcohol, tobacco or recreational drugs: they can all have a negative effect.

Physical activity: Too much or too little physical activity.

Female and sexual health issues: endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), painful intercourse (dyspareunia), vaginal dryness, vaginismus or difficulty reaching orgasm can all have a negative impact.

Pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding: intense hormonal upheaval, fatigue and stress are all factors that contribute to a reduced libido.

Perimenopause and menopause : oestrogen production drops, which can lead to a decrease in libido.

Health issues can have an impact, including: cancer, chronic kidney disease, chronic pain, diabetes, headaches, heart disease, hyperprolactinaemia, hypertension, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis.

Healthy lifestyle changes can make a difference and help address a drop in libido:
Regular physical exercise
Reducing stress
Communication
Stopping or cutting down on tobacco, alcohol, etc.
Using essential oils: ylang ylang and Damascus rose essential oils in massage, adding 2 drops to a vegetable oil such as coconut oil, or bitter orange essential oil
Bach flower remedies
Acupuncture

Although many libido food supplements are presented as natural stimulants, few have been the subject of studies to prove their efficacy. Most of them come in capsule format, which does not allow for a large quantity of active ingredients. The following is a non-exhaustive list of active ingredients supported by scientific studies demonstrating their efficacy: DHEA (a hormone naturally produced by the body and converted into oestrogens and testosterone), maca and shatavari (2 adaptogenic plants that help regulate hormones and improve libido, lubrication and arousal), ashwagandha and tribulus terrestris also have similar properties. A women's food supplement based on rhodiola is of interest as it is a plant that may help reduce stress and support dopamine production, which can contribute to increased libido. Fenugreek and ginger may help increase sexual arousal. Red clover, through its oestrogen-like effect, may contribute to improved libido. Ginseng could be of interest for vitality, and one study demonstrated its benefits during the menopause period using a combination of Korean ginseng and Siberian ginseng. Ginseng may also be beneficial for men and for erectile function. Saffron could be of interest, particularly in terms of wellbeing, mood and depression. One study on saffron alone and on saffron combined with vitamin E showed its benefits for women's libido. Saffron also has a beneficial effect in men for erectile function. Ginger is widely used to support libido, and its efficacy is traditionally recognised.
Please note that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking a libido food supplement should not be done without guidance, as many plants are contraindicated during these periods. A food supplement based on maca is not recommended during pregnancy but is compatible with breastfeeding, for example. Our Pink Balance powder food supplement contains maca and is compatible with breastfeeding. A food supplement based on ashwagandha or ginseng is also not recommended during these periods. Ginger, however, is compatible for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
In men, maca has notably beneficial properties in this regard, as well as on erectile capacity.

A varied and balanced diet is essential for overall good health, which will benefit hormones and libido. Some nutrients are particularly important when looking specifically at their benefits for sexual health. This is the case for:

Zinc: it may increase dopamine production and improve sexual desire.

Magnesium: it contributes to a healthy hormonal balance, which is essential for libido.

Vitamin D: vitamin D is essential for mood and wellbeing, and in particular supports the synthesis of serotonin. One study notably found that women with lower vitamin D levels have a lower libido. This observation also holds true for men. Our vitamin D pregnancy, suitable for all women, can help you meet your needs.

Iron: deficiency influences dopamine production (one of the main neurotransmitters involved in sexual response, desire, motivation, orgasm and reward) and is associated with hormonal imbalance. Our iron supplement for pregnant women, with iron bisglycinate suitable for all women, helps to meet your nutritional needs.

Omega-3s: they are the building blocks of sex hormones and are also essential for the brain and mood. One study notably demonstrated that omega-3 consumption can increase uterine blood flow. Our supplement omega-3 pregnancy, contains a dose also suited to women outside of the maternity period.

Protein: a low protein intake can lead to a decrease in libido.

L-arginine: an amino acid (a building block of proteins) which studies show improves sexual satisfaction by reducing vaginal dryness and increasing sexual desire, orgasm, and clitoral sensation.
