Pregnancy vitamins: the prenatal formula your body calls for

Growing a human being is arguably the most intense feat your body will ever accomplish during the nine months of pregnancy. It is a true metabolic marathon that demands absolute nutritional precision. We are not talking about "eating for two" in terms of quantity, but about nourishing two lives with vitamins and minerals of uncompromising quality. Thousands of women today choose to supplement their diet with prenatal multivitamins whose effectiveness has been designed for every trimester.

The most important thing will always be a good, varied and balanced diet to cover all your nutritional needs. However, between soil depletion, the relentless pace of daily life, and needs that surge from the very first weeks, diet alone can sometimes struggle to keep up. To support your health and that of your baby, we have developed expert products, free from the superfluous, available in capsules or powder to suit your preferences. Delivery is swift, pricing is transparent and ordering is simple, so your only concern is taking care of yourself:

  • Baby Bump: the cornerstone of your routine. An ultra-comprehensive prenatal complex (15 nutrients, including vitamins and minerals) featuring DHA, choline and vitamin B9 in the form of active folates (Quatrefolic). Its formulation has been designed to support every month of pregnancy.

  • Bump Essentials: the power of a prenatal in a vegan, fish oil-free formula. This product also comes in powder format (Bump Powder) for women who struggle with capsules.

  • Sunny Mummy: a concentrated source of vitamin D, essential for your immunity and your child's bone mineralisation.

  • Mama-gnésium: to calm the nervous system, say goodbye to night cramps and support restful sleep. This product is available in capsules, with a magnesium bisglycinate formula recognised for its effectiveness and tolerability.

The goal? To support your vitamin and mineral stores, and help you navigate this adventure with real energy. Your doctor or midwife will often recommend supplementing from the moment you start trying for a baby: our pregnancy multivitamins are here for exactly that.

FAQ, because we all ask these questions during pregnancy

The ideal is to plan ahead. The optimal time to begin a course of prenatal multivitamins is 3 months before conception.

➜ Discover our supplement range to support conception

Why so early? Because your body needs time to saturate its reserves of vitamins, minerals and folates, and to provide an optimal nutritional foundation from the moment of implantation. If you haven't planned ahead, don't worry: start as soon as you find out you're pregnant. The formulation of our products covers the needs of each trimester, as these evolve but never decrease right up to delivery. And for the months that follow, your multivitamins can transition to a post-partum formula suited to breastfeeding. Several options are available depending on your situation.

There is no single "miracle vitamin", because pregnancy is a biological symphony in which each nutrient plays a precise role in your body. It is the synergy between vitamins and minerals that matters. Here is the role of your key allies:

  • Vitamin B9, Quatrefolic® (active folates): essential for cell division and the growth of maternal tissues. The Quatrefolic® form is directly absorbable, with no conversion required.
  • Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin): works alongside B9 for the formation of red blood cells and supports the nervous system.
  • Vitamin D3: essential for immunity and the absorption of calcium into your baby's skeleton.
  • Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5: the driver of your everyday cellular energy.
  • Vitamin B6: highly popular in the 1st trimester for helping to regulate hormonal activity.
  • Vitamin B8 (Biotin): for the health of your hair and skin, which are often affected by hormones.
  • Vitamin C (and liposomal form): supports immunity and optimises iron absorption.
  • Vitamin E: a major antioxidant contributing to cell protection.
  • Vitamin K2 (K2VITAL®): ensures calcium is directed to the bones rather than soft tissues.
  • Choline: often absent from standard multivitamins, it plays a central role in your baby's brain development. Choline is available in the formula of our Baby Bump supplement, a choice our community recommends in their reviews.
  • Zinc: this mineral contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and to protein synthesis. Its role during pregnancy is well recognised.
  • Iodine: essential for normal thyroid function, iodine contributes to the cognitive development of the foetus. A regular intake is recommended by health authorities.

The answer is nuanced: no, it is not systematic. While iron is vital for transporting oxygen to your baby and contributing to the prevention of anaemia, an excess can be pro-oxidant. We recommend not taking iron "as a precaution" in a standard supplement. The ideal approach is to have a blood test (ferritin level) with your doctor or midwife. If a deficiency is confirmed, opt for a gentle form such as iron bisglycinate (found in our iron-rich supplement). At Jolly Mama, we recommend the product Iron Mama, available in capsules, which is much better tolerated by the stomach and whose effectiveness in raising iron levels has received very positive reviews. Delivery is free from a certain order value.

Take a breath, mama — it's not "serious". If health authorities recommend taking folates beforehand, it's to maximise protection against neural tube defects, which close very early (around week 4). If you start after finding out you're pregnant, you're still acting to support the continued development of the nervous system and tissue formation. In that case, it is essential to opt for Quatrefolic® (5-MTHF), an active form of folate that doesn't need to be converted by your body and whose efficacy is immediate.

The window for folate action is wider than you might think:

  • When to start : as soon as you stop your contraception or as soon as you start trying for a baby. Your doctor will generally recommend starting three months in advance.
  • When to stop: classic guidelines refer to the end of the 1st trimester. However, research shows that maintaining a good folate intake throughout pregnancy and during breastfeeding is beneficial for both maternal and infant health. It supports the continued growth of the foetus and contributes to preventing maternal anaemia. You can therefore continue taking your Baby Bump supplement without concern until the end of your pregnancy, then move on to the Post Essentials multivitamins, a formula tailored to the postpartum period and breastfeeding.

The golden rule is simple: during these nine months, the quality and source of your nutrients matter just as much as the dosage. Here are the points we recommend you pay close attention to:

  • Vitamin A (Retinol): at very high doses (often found in non-specific food supplements or through excessive liver consumption), it can pose risks to foetal development. Opt for beta-carotene (found in colourful fruits and vegetables), a natural precursor that your body converts according to its needs.
  • Self-medicating with Iron : for iron to be a true ally during your pregnancy, it needs to be adjusted to your actual needs. "Random" supplementation can be counterproductive if your stores are already sufficient. That is why it is essential to discuss this with your doctor or midwife. A simple ferritin test will allow them to confirm whether our product Iron Mama, available in capsules, is the right option for your situation.
  • The power of plants: nature is a precious ally for easing pregnancy discomforts (such as ginger for nausea). However, because plants are powerful actives, some may be inadvisable. At Jolly Mama, all our infusions and courses are formulated by perinatal experts, using only safe and gentle plants, tested for their safety. If you wish to use wild plants or isolated extracts, always seek the advice of your midwife.

The most common concerns during your pregnancy

Every pregnancy is a unique experience, and how you feel can fluctuate from one week to the next, from one month to the next. While certain discomforts are common, targeted food supplements can genuinely help you restore balance. Here is how to navigate your needs and the options available for each situation. Feel free to read reviews from our community of women to help you choose:

Loss of energy and persistent exhaustion

In the first trimester, your body is working flat out to build the placenta; in the third, it is carrying an increasingly significant weight. This fatigue can be physiological, but it sometimes reflects an increased need for iron or vitamin B12 in your body. If exhaustion sets in, a blood test is essential. Your doctor will be able to assess your situation. As a support, a course of B vitamins and magnesium may help restore energy levels. These products are available in capsule or powder form, depending on your preference.

➜ Discover our food supplements to combat fatigue

Heavy legs and restless legs

The increase in blood volume and uterine pressure puts your circulatory system under considerable strain during the final months of pregnancy. To ease that feeling of heaviness, pay attention to your intake of Vitamins C and E, which contribute to the health of your blood vessel walls. Magnesium also plays an important role in reducing the tingling sensations and involuntary muscle contractions that often occur at night.

➜ Discover our supplements for heavy legs

Broken and unrestorative sleep

Between toilet breaks, baby's movements, and natural anxiety, your nights can be short. Magnesium Bisglycinate (found in our Mama-gnésium) acts as a natural relaxant for your nervous system. Combined with a sufficient intake of Omega-3 (DHA), it contributes to deeper sleep and helps regulate your mood upon waking. Our Mama Dreams supplement, which contains the amino acid glycine, is also available to support restful, restorative sleep.

➜ Discover our supplements to improve sleep during pregnancy

Nausea and digestive sensitivity

Often linked to the hormonal upheaval of the first trimester, nausea can make taking supplements difficult during the early months of pregnancy. Vitamin B6 is the reference active ingredient recognised for easing these discomforts. Among the options available, our Bump Powder format (a powder to dilute) allows you to stay hydrated whilst receiving your vitamins without upsetting your stomach. Our Bye Bye Nausea ginger-based powder supplement may also help. Read the reviews to discover the effectiveness of these formulas.

Hair loss (or preparing for postpartum)

During pregnancy, oestrogen often gives you enviably thick, lustrous hair. However, fragility can appear if your reserves of Biotin (B8), Zinc, or Iron are too low. By securing your intake now with a suitable supplement whose formula includes these minerals, you are also preparing your hair health for the postpartum months, when reactive hair loss typically occurs. These products are recommended by many women in our community.

Hormonal balance and mood changes

Your hormones are in charge, and it is perfectly normal to feel more vulnerable. Good levels of Iodine (for your thyroid) and Vitamin D play a central role in stabilising your internal balance and supporting your overall health. These vitamins and minerals act as quiet regulators, helping you manage the emotional fluctuations that come with motherhood. Several options are available depending on your situation, with fast delivery to make your purchase easier.
