Your questions about gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes typically develops towards the end of the second trimester and generally disappears shortly after childbirth. During pregnancy, the body undergoes many metabolic changes, which can affect blood sugar levels, particularly in the second and third trimesters. 

 

During a normal pregnancy, a progressive insulin resistance develops from mid-pregnancy onwards and progresses through the third trimester. Gestational diabetes develops when a woman's pancreas does not secrete enough insulin to compensate for the metabolic stress caused by insulin resistance. 

The main risk factors associated with the development of gestational diabetes are obesity, advanced maternal age, a history of gestational diabetes, a family history of diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome and persistent hyperglycaemia. Increased maternal fat deposition, reduced physical activity and increased caloric intake all contribute to this condition.

In general, gestational diabetes disappears shortly after delivery. However, it can persist in the postpartum period, so it is important to continue monitoring your postpartum diet. It is important to be closely monitored by a healthcare professional to track the progression of this diabetes after delivery. Breastfeeding could be a factor that contributes to limiting the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. 

Following a low glycaemic index diet reduces the likelihood of needing insulin by 50%. The aim is to maintain normal blood sugar levels to help manage gestational diabetes. Nutrition is the cornerstone of gestational diabetes management. 

Favour low glycaemic index carbohydrates, such as certain fruits: apple, pear, grapefruit; nuts and seeds: pecans, cashews; all vegetables; and legumes: lentils, chickpeas, peas. Avoid industrial and refined sugars. 

Consuming fruit juices and processed cereals increases the risk of developing gestational diabetes, whilst consuming nuts reduces this risk. 

Be mindful of fruits with a high glycaemic index (dates, cherries, pineapple, etc.), which are not recommended in cases of gestational diabetes. 

 

Eating small portions of carbohydrates alongside proteins (which help stabilise blood sugar levels) and fats, or low-starch vegetables (which contain fewer carbohydrates), can be very helpful. One study notably showed that insufficient protein intake during the first trimester could be a higher risk factor for developing gestational diabetes. 

 

Consuming foods rich in fibre also helps to reduce the rise in blood sugar levels.

 

Certain nutrient deficiencies may also contribute to the development of gestational diabetes. Deficiency in vitamin D and in magnesium increase insulin resistance, which raises the risk of developing gestational diabetes. Our pregnancy vitamin D helps to meet your needs during this period.

Physical exercise improves blood sugar control in cases of gestational diabetes. In women who exercise regularly, the risk of developing gestational diabetes is reduced by 49 to 78%!

 

Moderate daily exercise for 30 minutes or more is recommended to help regulate blood sugar levels, reduce insulin resistance and lower the need for medication.

 

Walking at a brisk pace or doing arm exercises while seated in a chair for at least 10 minutes after each meal can help reduce the rise in blood glucose after eating and support glycaemic targets. To find out more, read our article exercise and pregnancy.

 

It is very important to pay attention to your diet. Avoid industrial and refined sugars, fruit juices, refined cereals, and high-glycaemic-index fruits, and include protein and fibre at every meal.

Gestational diabetes varies from woman to woman
