Vitamin K2 MK7 (K2VITAL®)
Vitamin K2 MK-7: K2VITAL®, your ally for bones and calcium
Vitamin K2 MK-7 contributes to the maintenance of normal bones by directing calcium towards the bones — essential support when motherhood draws on your reserves.
During pregnancy, calcium requirements increase to support the development of the baby's skeleton, and vitamin K2 contributes to its optimal use by the body.
Vitamin K2 contributes to normal blood clotting and may help maintain vascular flexibility, two important functions during maternity and the postpartum period.
Origin and description
Vitamin K2 MK-7 is a specific form of vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7), recognised for its long duration of action in the body.
Unlike vitamin K1 (phylloquinone), which is primarily involved in coagulation, K2 MK-7 is distinguished by its role in bone metabolism and calcium distribution. K2VITAL® is a patented form of MK-7, produced by organic synthesis, which guarantees high purity and stability. During pregnancy, vitamin K2 is particularly important for the development of the baby's skeleton and for maintaining the mother's bone density. Its bioavailability and extended half-life make the MK-7 form a reference choice in quality supplements.
Vitamin K2 MK-7 in the diet
Vitamin K2 is found naturally in certain fermented foods, with Japanese nattō being the most concentrated source of MK-7. It is also found in certain aged cheeses such as gouda and brie, in egg yolk, chicken and goose liver, and in pasture butter. Other fermented foods such as sauerkraut and certain yoghurts contain it in more modest amounts. The absorption of K2 is enhanced by the presence of fat in the meal, as it is a fat-soluble vitamin. Dietary intakes of K2 MK-7 are often low in the Western diet, which tends to include few traditional fermented foods. Diets low in fat or animal products may further limit intakes.
Vitamin K2 MK-7 as a supplement
In vitamin during pregnancy, vitamin K2 MK-7 is available as synthetic menaquinone-7 (such as K2VITAL®) or derived from fermentation (nattō). K2VITAL® is a benchmark for purity and stability, certified all-trans — the only biologically active configuration. The pregnancy food supplements Jolly Mama include vitamin K2 to support bone metabolism during maternity. The combination with vitamin D is particularly synergistic, as vitamin D supports calcium absorption whilst K2 directs its deposition towards the bones. This is also important in a menopause food supplement to support the bones.
Check for the all-trans form and the product's traceability. K2VITAL® is of synthetic origin and is suitable for vegetarian diets.

Vitamin K2 MK-7: K2VITAL®, your ally for bones and calcium
-
Bone capital
Vitamin K2 MK-7 contributes to the maintenance of normal bones by activating the proteins that bind calcium in the bones.
-
Calcium distribution
It helps direct calcium towards the bones rather than soft tissues and blood vessels, for optimal utilisation.
-
Blood clotting
Vitamin K2 contributes to normal blood clotting, an essential function during pregnancy and childbirth.
-
Synergy with vitamin D
Combined with vitamin D, K2 MK-7 optimises calcium metabolism for comprehensive bone support during maternity.
-
Baby's bone development
During pregnancy, K2 indirectly supports the baby's skeletal development by optimising the management of maternal calcium.
How does it work? (The science bit)
When you consume vitamin K2 MK-7, it is absorbed in the small intestine along with the fats from your meal and transported through the blood to target tissues. Its distinctive feature compared to other forms of vitamin K lies in its extended half-life: it remains active in the body for several days, ensuring continuous action. K2 MK-7 activates two key proteins: osteocalcin, which binds calcium into the bone matrix, and Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), which helps maintain vascular flexibility by limiting calcium deposits in the arteries.
During pregnancy, the development of the baby's skeleton mobilises significant amounts of maternal calcium. Vitamin K2 MK-7 helps to optimise the use of this calcium by activating osteocalcin, which may help to preserve the mother's bone density whilst supporting the baby's bone mineralisation. The K2VITAL® form guarantees an all-trans configuration — the only biologically active one — and optimal purity. In the post-partum period, a regular intake of K2 may support the restoration of bone reserves, especially in combination with vitamin D and calcium. Do explore our post-partum range.
Your questions, our answers.
Vitamin K1, found in green vegetables, acts primarily on blood clotting. Vitamin K2 MK-7, derived from fermented foods or produced by synthesis, is distinguished by its prolonged action on bone metabolism and calcium distribution. Its longer half-life allows for continuous action, making it the preferred form for bone support.
Yes, during pregnancy, the development of the baby's skeleton draws on the mother's calcium reserves. Vitamin K2 MK-7 helps to optimise the use of calcium by directing it towards the bones. Combined with vitamin D, it contributes to comprehensive bone support for both mother and baby throughout pregnancy.
Vitamin K2 MK-7 is very well tolerated at the usual doses found in food supplements. No notable adverse effects have been reported at commonly used dosages. It is fat-soluble, which means it is best taken with a meal containing a little fat to optimise absorption.
The main precaution concerns people on anticoagulant treatment of the anti-vitamin K (AVK) type, as vitamin K2 may interact with these medications. In this case, seek advice from a healthcare professional before taking any supplement. For other situations, K2 MK-7 has an excellent safety profile at recommended doses.
Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium in the intestine, but it is vitamin K2 that activates the proteins responsible for fixing it in the bones. Without sufficient K2, the calcium absorbed thanks to vitamin D may deposit in soft tissues rather than in the skeleton. This K2-D synergy is one of the most relevant combinations in prenatal nutrition.
We combine both in all our multivitamin supplements, including the women's multivitamins, the menopause vitamins, those for pregnancy and the postpartum period.
