Making the most of your fertility treatment journey

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART, or fertility treatment as it's commonly known), is a challenge that is far from easy for the couples who face it. How do you prepare for fertility treatment?

Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR, or AMP for those in the know) is a journey that is far from straightforward for the couples who face it. How do you prepare for MAR?

Try positive thinking. Every positive thought or feeling generates a virtuous circle and gives rise to further positive thoughts and feelings.

How can you relax during fertility treatment?

Several emotional management techniques are available to you to help you navigate your journey more peacefully:

Sophrology is a method that works on both the body and the mind.

Through breathing exercises, muscle relaxation and visualisation, it helps you better manage your emotions, approach the different stages of your journey with greater ease, manage pain, and rediscover a sense of wellbeing and vitality.

Plants are wonderful allies for helping you relax, whether as herbal infusions (linden, lavender, orange blossom…) or as essential oils (ylang-ylang, true lavender, damask rose…).
Please note that plants are not without risk — it is important to seek advice from a professional before using them.

There are also flower remedies that work on your different emotions and help to soothe them, the best known being the "rescue" blend, which brings comfort, patience, a sense of letting go, and courage.

Every positive thought or feeling generates a virtuous circle, giving rise to yet more positive thoughts and feelings.

That said, it's not about ignoring the difficult things you're going through — but it is important to find joy in every small moment of happiness.

In this way, it will help you approach the next steps of your journey with a more positive outlook.

Engaging in regular gentle physical activity helps you optimise your psycho-emotional wellbeing. It helps you release both physical and mental tension (the degree of muscular tension being linked to the degree of psychological tension), as well as releasing more feel-good hormones.

When rest is lacking, emotional wellbeing is particularly affected. This is because tiredness impacts mood, but also because sleep allows cortisol levels — the stress hormone — to come down.

Taking a fertility food supplement which helps to relax can also be helpful. It can be taken alongside a pregnancy supplement, which helps to replenish essential nutrients to support the body.

Don't forget yourself during fertility treatment

At the heart of a fertility treatment journey, we often tend to forget everything else. All concerns then revolve around this desire for a child.

It is perfectly normal for this desire to be at the centre of your concerns, particularly when your life is structured around medical appointments and treatments.

However, remember that before being a woman or a man going through fertility treatment, you are above all a person, a friend, a professional…

Your life should not be put on hold, at the risk of making this waiting period even harder to bear.
Reclaim the space for everything you are and everything that brings you joy and wellbeing.

Allow yourself to pursue all the projects you have been dreaming of and may have put on hold.

This will help you face the different stages of your journey with greater strength.

Did you know?

Be cautious about detoxing — it is strongly discouraged at the start of assisted reproduction, fertility treatment or during pregnancy. It could put all the accumulated toxins back into circulation, giving them the opportunity to migrate to the baby…

How to rediscover compassionate communication?

IVF/ART, along with the fatigue and tension it brings, can sometimes lead to a lack of communication and understanding within your relationship. Yet your partner is your greatest ally through this experience. Make sure to express your feelings and needs to your partner, and to listen to theirs in return. This will help you understand each other better and approach each other's reactions with greater objectivity.

This will allow you to go through IVF/ART hand in hand, because a child, however they are conceived, is above all a shared project that requires a great deal of love.

How can you better manage family and social relationships during fertility treatment?

In the context of assisted reproduction (ART), it is often tempting to keep this journey hidden from those close to you, to protect yourself from their remarks, intrusive questions, or simply because you feel uncomfortable discussing a subject that remains taboo and belongs to the private sphere.

You are obviously the only person who knows what is best for you, but do remember that the support of those close to you can prove to be a great comfort.

To nurture healthy and enjoyable family and social relationships, it is also important to communicate with those close to you. Do not hesitate to tell them how you feel, what may hurt you, and what you need from them throughout this journey. That might be simply being present, lending a listening ear, or checking in on you regularly. It is up to you to set your own boundaries and your own rules — your loved ones have almost certainly never been through these experiences themselves, and they simply may not know how to act, and can come across as clumsy. By guiding them, they will know how best to support you.

Making the most of your fertility treatment journey

How can you better manage the medicalised stages?

Assisted reproduction is punctuated by many medicalised steps, such as injections, scans, various medical examinations, egg retrievals, inseminations, embryo transfers…

For some couples, this is straightforward; for others, these are truly challenging steps.

Since these steps are unavoidable, the idea is to make them gentler and to navigate them with greater serenity.

Sophrology, through breathing techniques, visualisation and relaxation, can help you approach them with more ease.

The presence of your partner — and their involvement where possible — can be a source of comfort (for example, your partner could administer your daily injections).

Do not hesitate to give yourself a little "reward" after each step you find particularly challenging (a small treat, a pleasant moment together, a self-care session…).

How to cope better with the wait before the result?

All couples who have been through IVF or assisted reproduction know only too well the fifteen-day wait after insemination or embryo transfer.

This period is particularly difficult to live through emotionally, when you are waiting for a positive pregnancy test.

Even if these fifteen days represent only a tiny fraction of the waiting endured so far, they can feel no less endless.

The uncertainty about the fate of the transferred embryo or inseminated sperm leaves you oscillating between hope that it has worked and fear of failure.

Every symptom then becomes a source of questioning. This is perfectly understandable.

However, in order to get through this wait as calmly as possible, try as much as you can to give yourself moments for yourself. There is no better time than now to take care of yourself.

Allow yourself to believe it could work: trying to protect yourself from a possible failure will not necessarily make it less painful, but it will prevent you from fully living this moment.

Think now about everything you enjoy doing, alone, as a couple, with friends or with family, and plan at least one thing each day during this wait to do yourself some good.

This will help you cope better with the wait and take care of yourself.

How to better prepare the body for IVF?

Therefore, to help the body respond better to treatments and improve wellbeing, it is possible to:

To support an ART journey, the body needs a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients. This helps ensure good hormonal balance and the production of quality gametes (eggs and sperm). This is valuable because the success of ART depends on the quality of the gametes and embryos transferred. Moreover, certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies can interfere with implantation.
The recommended diet consists of quality (organic and seasonal) and unprocessed foods, including vegetables, fruits, good oils (such as linseed and camelina), white meat, pulses… To maximise enzyme, vitamin and mineral intake, sprouted seeds are particularly beneficial.
A multivitamin pregnancy supplement can be helpful to ensure nutritional needs are met. Likewise, taking a pregnancy omega-3, such as DHA, can help to improve egg quality.

A male fertility food supplement can also help to improve sperm quality.

When trying for a baby, whilst the reproductive organs play a central role, the liver also has a significant part to play. It is responsible for processing toxins as well as hormones.
During IVF treatment, the liver is under considerable strain due to the many hormonal treatments involved. Supporting it will help prevent it from becoming exhausted and allow it to function more optimally throughout the process.
It is therefore recommended to:
Limit exposure to toxins (by favouring organic food, cosmetics and household products).
Stay well hydrated (at least 1.5L per day).
Regularly apply a warm hot water bottle to the liver area to help liver cells regenerate.

For the endometrium to become the welcoming environment in which the embryo will implant, it needs oxygen and nutrients. These are delivered via the bloodstream, so supporting blood circulation — and thus the supply of oxygen and nutrients — helps to promote its optimal development. Several helpful approaches include: - Gentle physical activity, which stimulates blood circulation - Hydration, which supports increased blood volume and fluidity

After an IVF/ART protocol, a gentle detox is recommended to help the body eliminate accumulated toxins, particularly those from hormonal treatments. However, this is strongly discouraged at the start of a protocol or during pregnancy. Indeed, it would put all the accumulated toxins back into circulation, giving them the opportunity to migrate to the baby.

Our Ovo+ supplement may also help. It contains active ingredients, supported by scientific studies, to help improve oocyte quality.
