Take care mama

The aim is not to drink more than necessary, but to pay attention to your water intake, particularly if you are not used to drinking much.

What role does water play in the body?

The human body is made up mostly of water. The proportion of water varies depending on age and the individual.

Water plays a vital role in our body. It helps to transport nutrients to cells, eliminate waste and maintain the body at the right temperature.

The body is not able to produce sufficient water, so it is necessary to obtain it through food and to drink water in addition.

What are the water requirements during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes many physiological changes, including significant changes in fluid balance.

Water content during pregnancy increases considerably, by an average of 6 to 8 litres. This water is found in:

  • The amniotic fluid,
  • The foetus (made up mostly of water)
  • The placenta,
  • Blood volume, which increases by nearly 50%.

It is therefore important to stay well hydrated in order to feel your best.

Pregnant women who experience vomiting lose significant amounts of fluid and should pay particular attention to staying hydrated.

Pregnant women are advised to drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water per day.

Tips

To try to drink more water, you could try herbal teas or infused waters!

Which pregnancy discomforts can be eased with proper hydration?

Staying well hydrated during pregnancy can help prevent certain discomforts.

Adequate hydration combined with a fibre-rich diet helps prevent constipation. To find out more, read our article on constipation and pregnancy.

Drinking enough water can significantly reduce the risk of urinary tract infections by diluting the urine and thereby lowering the risk of infection.

How to stay well hydrated during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, it is important to stay well hydrated. Water comes from both food and drinks.

From a nutritional standpoint, pregnant women should maintain a balanced diet, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and avoid foods that are too fatty, sugary, or processed.

When it comes to drinks, water and herbal teas should be your first choice — avoid sugary drinks.

For mums who don't usually drink enough, here are a few tips:

  • Think of soups and broths: we have a bone broth already prepared for you, Mama Poule, of which a 240 ml serving contains nearly 6g of natural collagen, directly absorbed by the body.
  • Have a warm drink in the morning and in the afternoon during breaks, such as a pregnancy herbal tea.
  • You can consider electrolytes, but always choose a pregnancy vitamin with caution, making sure it is suitable for use during pregnancy.
  • Always have a bottle of water with you.

Which water should I choose during pregnancy?

Tap water is safe to drink in France.

It is preferable for pregnant women to drink low-mineral waters. These waters, particularly if slightly acidic, may also be appreciated in cases of nausea and heartburn.

In cases of constipation, you may wish to turn to waters rich in magnesium.

You can also drink herbal teas to keep hydrated and as a treat. Do be careful to choose a pregnancy-safe herbal tea, such as our Sweet Mama, as certain plants are not recommended during pregnancy.

To conclude

During pregnancy, the mother needs to consume between 1.5 l and 2 l of water per day.

A good water intake will help the pregnant mother to feel well and avoid certain pregnancy discomforts.
