Acerola: natural vitamin C and ally for your vitality

ingredient acerola
Natural vitamin C for fatigue

Acerola is one of the most concentrated natural sources of vitamin C, a vitamin that contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue and to supporting immune defences — a real boost for mothers whose daily lives are increasingly demanding.

An ally for iron absorption

During pregnancy, iron requirements increase considerably. The vitamin C in acerola supports the absorption of plant-based iron, which can help maintain good energy levels and limit fatigue associated with iron deficiency.

Recovery & breastfeeding

In the postpartum period and during breastfeeding, vitamin C contributes to the formation of collagen and supports the body's natural defences, helping physical recovery and preserving vitality over the weeks ahead.

Origin and description

Acerola (Malpighia punicifolia) is a small red fruit native to Central and South America, belonging to the Malpighiaceae family

Often compared to a cherry in shape and colour, this fruit is among the richest dietary sources of vitamin C, an essential vitamin whose benefits for the immune system, reduction of fatigue and skin health are well recognised.

Its relevance for health is particularly compelling around pregnancy and the postpartum period, two phases when nutritional needs intensify and when vitamin C facilitates iron absorption. The quality of the extract, its degree of standardisation and its drying method, directly determines its active content and efficacy.

In nature, acerola takes the form of a small fleshy fruit, bright red when ripe, resembling a cherry. It is eaten fresh in tropical countries — Brazil, Mexico, the Caribbean — but rarely available as such in Europe. Other fruits are recognised for their vitamin C content: kiwi, red pepper, blackcurrant, fresh parsley or citrus fruits can complement daily intake. The absorption of vitamin C depends on cooking, which degrades it rapidly, on the freshness of the food and on the overall dietary context. The properties of vitamin C are better preserved in raw, fresh foods. Intake through diet alone often remains variable depending on the season, personal preferences, dietary choices or allergen constraints.

As a food supplement, acerola is available as a dried fruit powder, standardised extract in vitamin C supplement, chewable tablets or capsules. It also works well in snacks, enriched porridges, and in a vitamin for pregnancy, a food supplement fatigue or collagen powders Jolly Mama, for an easy and enjoyable daily intake. A standardised extract guarantees a consistent vitamin C content from one serving to the next, which remains the essential quality criterion to check. Acerola is naturally vegan, though those sensitive to oxalates may wish to exercise caution.

How does it work? (The science bit)

The vitamin C found in acerola is something of a cornerstone of its action in the body. As soon as you consume acerola, whether in a porridge or a granola Jolly Mama, it is absorbed in the small intestine, passes into the bloodstream and is distributed to cells and tissues. There it plays several roles at once: it strengthens the body's natural defences, contributes to the production of collagen — the protein that gives structure to skin, blood vessels and tissues — and acts as an antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress. It also plays a facilitating role with iron: in the presence of vitamin C, the body absorbs non-haem iron more effectively, the kind found in plant-based foods, including at the level of the liver, which stores iron reserves.

During pregnancy and the postpartum period, this dual effect — supporting energy and improving iron absorption — becomes particularly valuable. Pregnancy draws on significant amounts of iron for the baby's development and to maintain the mother's blood volume. A regular intake of vitamin C, via naturally rich foods such as organic acerola, can help to optimise these intakes. During breastfeeding, the benefits of vitamin C continue to support the immunity of both mother and child. Feel free to discover our products for fatigue.
