Fenugreek food supplement: a traditional ally for breastfeeding

Fenugreek fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a plant from the Fabaceae family, cultivated for thousands of years around the Mediterranean. Its small seeds are rich in mucilages, fibre and minerals. In supplement form, they provide a regular, easy-to-integrate daily intake, without having to prepare the seeds yourself. This is the plant traditionally cited for lactation that can be found in several of our snacks.

In this fenugreek food supplement collection, you will find our indulgent snacks made with organic fenugreek seeds. The Cho-chocolat contains fenugreek combined with 200 mg of DHA per snack, the Banana choc with banana and oat flakes, and Choco nut in a chocolate granola format. These squares are enjoyed as a snack — a simple way to benefit from fenugreek without the sometimes pronounced taste of plain seeds.

Fenugreek is best known in the context of breastfeeding and the post-partum period, a time when simple, reassuring guidance is especially welcome. Depending on where you are in your journey, you can also explore our ranges dedicated to breastfeeding and lactation, as well as our solutions designed for the post-partum period.

Key takeaway: fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is traditionally cited as a galactagogue in the Arab world, where its name derives from the word for milk. Our snacks contain it in the form of organic seeds. Fenugreek remains a traditional use, to be accompanied by appropriate monitoring.

FAQ - Fenugreek during breastfeeding and the postpartum period

Fenugreek is a plant from the Fabaceae family, the same as peas or lentils. Its seeds, ochre in colour, have been used since antiquity in cooking and herbal medicine. They are rich in mucilages, fibre and minerals. They can be consumed as seeds, in powder form, in capsules or, as with Jolly Mama, incorporated into indulgent snacks.

Fenugreek is traditionally cited as a galactagogue, meaning a plant reputed to support milk production. This use is ancient, particularly in the Arab world, where its name derives from the word for milk. It is a traditional use to support lactation, but it does not replace effective latching and regular breastfeeding. Fenugreek can complement this period, without replacing appropriate support and guidance.

The simplest option is a ready-to-consume form. Our snacks, such as the Banana choc, provide fenugreek in a bite-sized snack designed for a new mum's break. You can also find it as seeds to steep, as a powder to sprinkle, or in capsules. The key is to choose a form that is easy and enjoyable to incorporate into your daily routine.

Fenugreek can give a slight distinctive smell to perspiration or urine, sometimes described as similar to maple syrup. This is a known and harmless effect. Some mamas don't enjoy its strong taste in raw seed form, which is why we incorporate it into sweet snacks like the Banana choc, which is gentler on the palate.

Fenugreek is generally reserved for the breastfeeding period and is not recommended during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, it is better to turn to solutions designed for this stage, such as our pregnancy. For any questions about your situation, please seek advice from your midwife or doctor.

Fenugreek may interact with certain treatments, particularly those that affect blood sugar levels or clotting. Like any supplement, it is part of a varied and balanced diet, not a replacement for one.

The recommended daily dose depends on the form chosen and is indicated on the packaging of each product: capsules, powder, oil or snacks. At Jolly Mama, one to two snacks per day is sufficient. Always follow the usage instructions indicated on the product.

Three of our breastfeeding snacks contain organic fenugreek seeds: the Cho-chocolat (which also contains 200 mg of DHA per snack), the Banana choc and the Abricool. Our Choco nut granola also contains it. The Mama moonies, on the other hand, is more of a snack in the style of a moringa supplement, for those who are put off by the taste of fenugreek. All these products are gluten-free and made in France.

Benefits of our products for Fenugreek food supplement: a traditional ally for breastfeeding

Understanding fenugreek and its use as a food supplement

A traditional plant for the new mum

Fenugreek has been supporting mothers for thousands of years. Cultivated around the Mediterranean, it was first a food and medicinal plant before becoming a food supplement available in capsule, powder or organic seed form. Its reputation around lactation transcends cultures, from North Africa to India, where it is among the plants associated with regaining strength after birth. This cultural dimension partly explains its place in the world of motherhood.

Seeds, powder, capsules or snacks: which form to choose

Fenugreek comes in several forms as a food supplement, each with its own advantages. To make the right choice, several criteria matter: the origin and quality of the seeds, the ingredient list, the dose per serving, the price and ease of use in daily life. Reviews and feedback from other mums can also guide your choice.

Did you know: the Arabic name for fenugreek, hèlba, comes from the word halib, meaning milk. This shared root is a reminder of how closely the plant is associated with breastfeeding in Arab traditions, where a fenugreek couscous was offered to new mothers.

Incorporating fenugreek into your daily routine as a new mum

To enjoy fenugreek without any hassle, the idea is to build it into a simple routine. Whether you choose fenugreek seeds, powder, organic fenugreek capsules or our snacks, fenugreek food supplements fit naturally into an afternoon snack — often a low-energy moment for a tired new mum. Fenugreek pairs well with chocolate, dried fruit and oats, which softens the natural taste of the seeds. To help sustain your energy through those intense days, you can also explore our solutions for fatigue.

Mama tip: if the taste of fenugreek puts you off in seed or powder form, go for a more indulgent option. Our Cho-chocolat, Banana choc and Abricool snacks incorporate organic seeds into a sweet recipe, making it much more enjoyable to take every day.

Fenugreek is not recommended during pregnancy or if you have an allergy to legumes. It may interact with certain treatments, particularly those relating to blood sugar levels or blood clotting. If you are currently on any medication, have a relevant medical history or are unsure, pay close attention to the precautions indicated on the products and take your personal situation into account.
