Does an exclusively breastfed baby need water in summer?

Should you offer water to a breastfed baby during a heatwave? How many wet nappies should a baby have?

In this article, we take stock of managingbreastfeeding day to day in summer.

Take care mama

Your milk, as well as being nourishing, is made up of 88% water. It is the ideal drink for hydrating a breastfed baby — they do not need any additional water.

What are the recommendations for breastfeeding?

The WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. Your breast milk provides all the energy and nutrients your baby needs.

Although the practice of giving water during the first 6 months is still very widespread, doing so is counterproductive and harmful to your breastfeeding journey.

After 6 months, if your baby has started weaning, you can offer water at mealtimes in a cup. They will drink according to their thirst. If you are still breastfeeding, don't hesitate to continue offering the breast often!

Why does an exclusively breastfed baby not need water, even in hot weather?

A baby, even a very young one, who is exclusively breastfed on demand (day and night) does not need to receive water supplements, even in hot weather or in a warm climate.

Studies on exclusively breastfed infants in hot countries, with high temperatures and very low humidity, show that their urine density remains within normal ranges, which indicates adequate water intake.

Furthermore, a 10% reduction in caloric intake has been observed in exclusively breastfed babies who are given water supplements.

Did you know?

Giving water to a breastfed baby can even carry risks. If they drink water as well, they will take less breast milk, which will reduce their calorie intake and they may lose weight.

What are the risks of giving water to an exclusively breastfed baby?

Replacing breast milk with a liquid that has no nutritional value can have significant consequences for your baby's health. Water will fill their stomach and suppress their appetite. They risk missing nutritious feeds that they need. Studies show that supplementing an exclusively breastfed baby with water can reduce their breast milk calorie intake by 10%.

If water is given to your baby, they are more exposed to organisms that can cause diarrhoea (with a risk of dehydration). If your baby shows signs of diarrhoea, do not wait before consulting a doctor, and continue to breastfeed, increasing the frequency of feeds.

What is the composition of breast milk?

Breast milk is made up of nearly 88% water, and adapts in real time to your baby's needs.

A exclusively breastfed baby will generally have shorter and more frequent feeds in hot weather.

Your baby will have everything they need by being breastfed on demand, without restriction (day and night).

At birth, even though your baby receives little water through colostrum (which is very rich in proteins and antibodies), they do not need a water supplement.

Furthermore, breast milk has a low solute content (sodium, potassium…). One of the functions of the kidneys is to eliminate excess solutes. As breast milk is low in solutes, exclusively breastfed babies do not need as much water as older children or adults.

Breastfeeding in summer

Our practical tips for hot weather

En cas de fortes chaleur, allaitement à la demande of course, mais on n’hésite pas aussi à être proactive et à proposer souvent le sein.

Don't forget to dress baby appropriately. They should wear one extra layer compared to you, as they move very little. Bear in mind that if you are carrying them in a sling, the fabric can count as one or two layers depending on the carry position.

A baby under 6 months old should wet at least 6 nappies (nice and heavy) per day (over 24 hours). The nappies should be pale in colour and should not smell unpleasant. If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult a doctor!

If you are travelling with your baby by car, take regular breaks every 2 hours to offer the breast. Babies often tend not to ask to feed when travelling, lulled by the motion of the road. So do stop regularly to prevent dehydration, even if you are lucky enough to have an air-conditioned car.

It is recommended that breastfeeding mothers stay well hydrated and drink plenty of water. If you find it difficult to drink water regularly, you can try infused waters or have a breastfeeding herbal tea to help you increase your water intake.

Key takeaways

A baby exclusively breastfed up to 6 months has absolutely no need for additional water. In times of intense heat, go into open-bar mode and offer the breast to your baby frequently!

And it's a good opportunity to make sure we stay well hydrated too. If needed, you can take some breastfeeding food supplements rich in electrolytes to support optimal hydration.
